Hey, I'm doing a bit of an experiement and need to obtain:
Wormwood
Hyssop
Coriander
Caraway
Cardamom
Fennel (or anise)

Has anyone seen any of these in various travels about seoul?

Is this an absinthe recipe?

If so,what are you doing for a still?

This IS an absinthe recipie. I have been readin up on it alot, and it appears that if a high enough proof liquor is used (151), then the essential oils can be leached post process, through a 14 day soak. Admittedly, one will not recieve all of the Thujone that is possible- but one WILL get the effects.

yeah I've currently got 2 bottles of absinthe sitting on my liquor cabinet. Got them in Japan tho so I'm not so sure they are the real thing. Last time I had real absinthe I ended up low crawling through a friends front yard thinking I was in the middle of a fire fight.

wormwood is 약쑥 in Korean. It's pretty easy to find.

I've bought anise at one of the Pakistani supermarket in Ittaewon. I guess you can get the rest of the herbs and spices there.

Do a search for the English name and '판매' ('wormwood 판매'). Better yet, check what they are in an English-Korean dictionary and Google the Korean names with '판매' (ex:약쑥 판매). I almost always find a store that sells whatever I'm looking for that way.

Not sure about hyssop and caraway, but fennel, corriander and cardamom should be available at the foreign food shops in Itaewon

Well, for future reference, I have now found everything but Hyssop and Wormwood at the hannam supermarket.
Hollywood action- THANK YOU! That will be a tremendous help. Though, I can't help but wonder what Koreans use wormwood for.

If you can get together a bit of copper tubing I think I can mock up a still. Know any good plumbing stores? Just DO NOT GET ANY LEAD based sealers.. Jesus.. you will be baked out of your gourd and brain dead... or is that more brain dead... anyway...

Copper tubing.... about half inch diameter... maybe 5 feet in length?? Been awhile...

That should work for the condensor coil. We can use the stove to provide the heat.. and a large steel crock. Might have to tap and drill a hole in the lids of one of your pots to make a sealed vessel.. What works even better is one of those steel crocks that has a notched lid for stove top use.

Cooling the condensor coil can either be air cooled, but typically the better ones are water cooled.. not completely difficult if you can run the whole contraption over you sink.

Oh yeah.. If you actually agree to this madness and something blows up.. I so don't know you and never heard of you.

Thujone doesn't cause hallucinations. It causes muscle spasms and convulsions. If that's your idea of a good time, have at it.

Dan- Don't forget son, I'm from West Virginia, I know my way around a still. That said, if you want to get involved, let me know.

Sir Fink- As someone who has taken Absinthe before, allow me to state that yes, in large doses it does cause muscle spasm and convulsions- but so does yellow mustard. The lethal dose of Thujone is 45 mg. The average dose in liquor is 6. While hallucinations may not be 100% agreed upon, (due in large part to the US's continued/unfounded condemnation of the drink), they have been considered part of the effects of the drink for over 200 years. If I said that alcohol does not make you drunk, would it stop making you drunk? Further science- the inhibition of the GABA receptors, increases the rate of neural synapse firing, which causes the convulsions at high doses, Increased neural synapse response is what is responsible for the "different feeling" that one gets from absinthe. Finally, it is a drink- thats it, a really cool, and tastey beverage. Its not like I'm talking about freebasing crack here, so go bother someone else, spoilsport.
