I'm heading to BK via Hong Kong later next month and trying to organise my schedule. I gather there's several ways to get there to Ko Samui but will probably opt for flying. Is it best to organise ticket from here or could I get one when I get there? Ie; cheaper option? Also re accommodation; I plan to head to Maenam beach area can I just rock up and find a place or is it best to book in advance? I'm not looking for cheap, backpacker style so hopefully have more options.
Thanks in advance |

thes guys are good. They acutally own the airport on Koh Samui, so its the only operator to Koh Samui proper. Otehrwise you have to take a plane to a mainland city (can't remembr the name) then ferry over. |

If at all possible, make sure you fly to Koh Samui using Bangkok Air. I just recently made the trip myself using Bangkok Air in and then taking the ferry to Surat Thani for the Thai Air flight home. While the ferry wasn't too bad, the trip by taxi (I somehow took the ferry that I was supposed to take to catch the connecting bus but still "missed" it somehow) was a ridiculous price. I was told that was the only option to get to the airport, kind of believe them after seeing how small the airport was. But I may have just been had. Either way avoid all that and just book flight to and from the island. Once there you can easily find accomodation. We went on New Years week and found places no problem on Chaweng, so I'm sure the other beaches would be a lot easier.
There's also an option to take a bus from Koh Samui all the way back to Khao San Rd (Bangkok) but I think this is probably not going to save you any money and waste a lot of time. |

| I like taking the overnight train to Surat Thani. You can get air conditioned bunks, and they are clean and comfortable unless you're over 200cm tall. Then the 2-3 hour boat to Samui. Much cheaper, and on a nice day, that boat tride is a great way to ease into vacation mode. |
