The thought of no afterlife (of any religion) is as bothersome as the myth of sysiphus (sp?) by Camus- i.e. no afterlife=no purpose= the only logical solution in an illogical world is suicide.

If there's no afterlife, you'll never know; so why be afraid of that? If your consciousness is gone, you won't be conscious of it going. It will just be gone. You just won't exist. You won't know that you don't. You just won't be here in any way.

I also think that I disagree with you, here. Since you like Camus, you should read "The Plague."

There's always a reason for hope, even if our consciousness is only temporary.

something is going to happen to my dad and esp. when i move away is my biggest fear. my mom died of an unexpected heart problem nearly 3 yrs ago and he's already had 2 heart surgeries. it plagues me quite often. i used to go stand next to his door when he was sleeping just to hear if he was snoring cause i was afraid he'd die while everyone was sleeping like my mom did. oi.

Getting mowed down those granite stairs in the subways packed with crowds, especially with silly women teetering around on anklebreakers... yikes. Like human bowling, downhill.

I also feared that my father would die while I was in Korea (since he was 83...) Sure enough he sadly passed away last month...

But I at least philosophically undertand that our essential life force is not material and survives these physical bodies and ultimately this material world...

As a young kid I used to intensely pray that my mom and dad wouldn't die - especially whenever they left the house... I also feared the dark.

In darkness, we fear death. Enlightened beings don't lament for the dead (or living...) knowing that we're all connected to (and cared for by) God and we all exist (as conscious individuals) forever...

It involves these large boulders rolling down a street. They are immense beyond their size. They're mass is quite overwhelming...so much so that they have an almost magnetic effect on my person. I am in a position to do absolutely nothing. I am helpless to the large inanimate boulders rolling down the street. I've had this fear/nightmare since I was a young child and the thought of it taps into some deep fear I can't quite pinpoint.

Perhaps I was crushed to death by boulders as a dinosaur when the meteor hit in a past life?

Being eaten alive by humans. Imagining their teeth ripping my flesh like ravenous weasels makes my baby hairs curl.
