i work at a hagwon and teach 24 - 50 min classes and 4 - 40 min classes during the week. i think i found a sweet deal since i don't work saturdays and my pay is $2200/month...and i've never had any teaching experience.

I've got 25 fifty minute class periods a week. Sometimes I'll pick up another class period or two temporarily since a lot of the Korean staff is being shuffled around. I think my schedule is pretty easy.

Approx sixty-five 25 minute classes a week. Every week. Not the ideal situation.

i do 17 45 minute classes a week during this winter vacation. In February i will be doing 13 45 minute classes per week. It gets really boring when you have so much free time and nothing to do. Would rather be productive with my time.

A couple of grade 6 classes have ended because they begin middle school hagwon classes, and since there's a lull in adult classes... i teach 14 classes a week at the hagwon for 2.2 mill and the apart. Last year I had the hardship of having to teach 22 classes a week and might have to go back to that in March. And - oh - I only work Mondays through Thursdays. Very Happy Never before 2:20 pm and always done by 7:50 pm the latest, and always with a dinner break of 20-40 minutes.

(I just decided - today! - to sign on for another year at the same contract conditions. should I have asked for a raise? maybe, but i'm not greedy. besides, i didn't want them to start wanting me to work the fridays I got off before agreeing to come to this small town.)

Beginning of story: I once worked.....

120 hours equals 40 one hour classes per week if based on a 20 day work month. I use to work this many during regular sessions; once in a while it would go down to 36 for a few days. Then, as a favor, I was given kinder classes so I wouldn't have to stay until 9:30 p.m. Started at 9 a.m. and finished at 7:30 or 8:30 p.m. Other teachers came in at 2 p.m. and finished at 9:30 or 7:30. What a favor; she threw me into a big split shift.

Winter and summer intensives averaged about 60 hours a week. Then, in the last week she would change everyone's schedule and effectively cut your overtime. I think the most anyone got paid, was for 15 extra hours. Everyone met with her as a group but it didn't do any good to argue with her Korean logic.

After that, most of us refused to work any overtime.

Take a look at your contract. Work overtime if you choose (it should not be mandatory). Does your contract stipulate the number of classes? If you signed a contract that doesn't state the number of classes, then the director can pretty much screw you.

Kind of makes a person realize how tiring 120 hours of direct teaching can be when you add preparation, grading, reports, tests, etc.

It may not be that the director is too cheap to hire another teacher. Could be a case of people not accepting a contract offer due to the terms.
