CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida's deputy leader mocked
President Bush's plan to send 21,000 more troops to
Iraq, challenging him to send "the entire army," according to a new al-Qaida videotape released Monday by a U.S. group that tracks terror messages.
Excerpts from the video were distributed by the Washington-based SITE Institute, which said it had intercepted the footage of Ayman al-Zawahri. The tape had not yet been posted on Islamic militant Web sites, where his messages are usually placed.
Al-Zawahri said the U.S. strategy for Iraq, outlined by Bush in a Jan. 9 speech, was doomed to fail. |
Yeah, I have to say it is a rather dumb plan. I have a feeling bush chose 20K because it was better than nothing, but not big enough to get rejected by Congress.

It was the third message by al-Zawahri in just over a month and it helped to underline the increasingly rapidity with which the terror network comments on events in the news. In the past, new videos would often refer to events dating back months before the message's appearance. |
Another sign that things aren't going so smoothly in Afghanistan. Perhaps if we had not invaded Iraq and used so many resources there, we would have actually caught this a-hole and his "boss." |

I do believe that placing more troops, in Iraq, in theory could help put more pressure on the various militias and try to put a stop to those making trouble on the Shiite and Sunni sides, but they may mean far more casualties for America.
During the Korean War, so many troops were sent there to deal with a much smaller population. Fast forward to 2003 and the White House underestimated potential foes. I want to hear of a plan that makes sense on the part of Casey and then I may see some logic to adding troops on the ground. Frankly, I am not sure 20,000 would cut it.
You would need probably more than that. I am not endorsing what Bush is doing because I am worried about getting more of the same. I do however believe in the idea of overwhelming your enemy. However, Bush has only overwhelmed the tax payers. Even if there is a plan and a good idea, Bush has lost whatever credibility he had. |
