Alona beach is like a mini Boracay. There are a few bars, restaurants and diversions.

It is a 30 minute drive (US$8 cab ride) to Tagbilaran city and the usual nightlife - bars, discos, fast food, malls, etc.

Resorts start at $10 for a fan room and go up to $100 for 5* luxury.

A pension room in the city will run about 10-15 per night. Business hotel (Metro) is $35 for a basic room and $80 for a penthouse suite (which I can recommend from personal experience).

Bohol tropics resort (in town and NOT out at Alona beach) runs $30-60 per night. It is a full featured resort complete with w pools, dive shop, 2 or 3 restaurants, live entertainment in the evening, cable TV, IDD phones and wireless internet in the lobby area.

Life is a bit more rustic and a little slower out at Alona beach but certainly worth it and there are enough people around to keep life interesting if you are a little bit outgoing.

Alona Tropical is highly recommended but Alona Kew is OK too. Lost Horizon will do in a pinch. Rooms start at about $25 per night and go up to about $100 for the best room in the place.

Lots of low cost restaurants and bars along the beach. I like the restaurant at Alona tropical and Oops bar on the beach for watering holes.

Alona Beach is GORGEOUS. White powdery sound much like Boracay.

I stayed at Alona Beach.. and during the day did my Bohol-related excursions like Chocolate Hills, etc.

Rented a taxi driver for the entire day.. and he took us all over the island.. don't recall the cost.. but it wasn't much and definetely well worth it. (Probably less than US$25 for the day.. maybe much less.. can't recall now).

We're more into the quieter beaches, but we really want to go to a beautiful white beach. We've heard that Boracay can get quite crowded during April and May (thats when we're going), so do you think we'd regret skipping it, if we made do with Alona beach instead? We'll also be going to Palawan.

The problem with Boracay is there is only nightlife and beach activities.

The benefit to Alona beach is you have the nightlife, beach activities, AND the other activities that are available on Bohol like island tours, go see the Tarsiers, lunch on the loboc river, chocolate hills, 300 year old Spanish churches and shopping in Tagbilaran city.

Easy to get to as well.
1) Fly from here to Manila, catch one of the 4 times daily flights to Tagbilaran.
2) Fly direct to Cebu and catch one of the many ferries that cross between Cebu and Bohol. The Fast Cat runs 4x daily and there are slow ferries that run almost hourly.

I think you wouldl be well ahead with Alona beach. This is not to say that I have anything against Boracay - I like it there too.... same but so different.

I just left Bohol yesterday after spending a week there. I did basically what Ttompatz is recommending. The island tour costs about $50 (but can cost more), but it was for 2 people and we had a private car. It took about 7 hours, so it was a long day. Everything else they said is about right and I am really happy I went. We are going to Boracay tomorrow for 3 nights, so we will see how that is.
