To the OP.
Do ignore above statement. I am sure Indonesia is a beautiful city and people charming but when someone makes a statement about a "soul" about the whole country, you know he or she is not being objective.
This is doubly so when you consider the fact that most English teachers are in a foreign country temporarily and are not good at or too lazy to learn local language.
It would be somewhat similar to Chinese man going to America and staying in Chinatown for few years, never bothering to learn English and bitching about how Americans lack that Asian "heart." It is of course ridiculous.
Additionally, some Westerners naively (perhaps because of Hollywood), equate underdeveloped countries with all things "Untainted." Beaches are wonderful, people innocent, women charming,.. etc.
There are reasons why some countries are underdeveloped. And the reasons aint pretty. |

Let's talk what pay is converted to American dollars or British pounds. I think you are trying to say Indonesia has cheaper goods, but what do employees make per month. Most English teachers don't need a maid, and if a maid costs $1000, it's not a maid, it's a prostitute. |
HAHAHA!!! Take that Miss Seoul. |

First of all, Indonesia is a country not a city. I was simply positing my opinion as I have spent a great deal of time in both Jakarta and Seoul. In the former I have family, friends and speak the language. Here I have friends and get by in my rudimentary Korean. I don't know what point you were really trying to make, but advising the OP to ignore my experienced, first hand impressions would seem to be a tad dismissive. I suffer no illusions that Indonesia is untainted; it has its fair share of problems. In the interests of balance I'll tell you that the traffic, poor public transport, floods, 'hello misterrrrr' choruses and the occasional attitude of locals to orang rinso can be frustrating. However, I stand by my original assertion that Jakarta has a soul, as do other places I have visited, New Orleans, Oaxaca, Kolkata, Athens and Edinburgh, just to name a few. Whilst I still get a buzz out of living in Korea, I would personally (and that's the kicker, its a personal observation from a very experiences and seasoned traveler), prefer to live in Indonesia than here. |
