|
|
I tried to go to the immigration office to extend my tourist visa today. Their web site says they're at the Government Complex on line 4 but when I got there, the women at the information desk said to go to the Omokgyo stop on line 5. That's all they said, no information about where to go from the subway station once I get there. Has anyone been to the immigration office at Omokgyo? Where is it from the subway station? |

I don't know what the situation is with the Swampland Branch of Seoul Immigration, but if you're on a tourist visa, can't you go to any branch that's most convenient? You frequently mention Insa-dong in your posts. The Sejongno Branch of Seoul Immigration is walking distance from Insa-dong. |

Seoul Immigration Office Sejongno Branch Office
SK Hub Bldg. 2F, 89-4,
Gyeongundong, Jongno-gu, Seoul
Tel: 82-2-732-6214
(That phone number is typically busy for hours on end, and it's the only one they publish.)
There is nothing to distinguish the SK Hub Bldg. from any other largish office building in Seoul. It's very near Exit 6 of Anguk Station on the Orange (No. 3) Line. Here's the building AS IT APPEARS AS YOU EMERGE FROM THE SUBWAY STATION (i.e., the side view, i.e., NOT as it appears from the street as you fly by in a cab at the speed of sound).
And a map with absolutely no English on it.

It's next to the police station.
They will only accept you if your from the northern gus of Seoul. |

And as tourists aren't officially from any gu, does that mean they can or can't use that or any other branch they want? Presumably, the immigration offices in the provinces also have these "jurisdictions", so to speak, as I've heard posters in Gyeonggi-do griping about being sent packing by immi officials insisting they go to "the other" office. But those are people with work permits, not tourists. If a tourist were in Jeju Island or some other remote location and their visa was about to expire, must they fly to the Seoul Immigration HQ to get an extension? I don't know the answers to these hypotheticals. In any case, the Sejongno Branch is fortunately only a few minutes' walk from Insa-dong. |

I went this morning. Took about 20 minutes, 2 month extension, cost 30,000 won. |

I'm from the U.S. I went in four days before my 30-day tourist visa expired. I asked for less than two months but they gave me two months, anyway- not that I'm complaining. No one gave me the evil eye, they were pretty fast and efficient.
How are you dressed when you go in there? I went in in a business suit, hair up, jewelry, briefcase. Pay attention to your posture, too: stand tall and sit up straight sort of towards the edge of your chair, feet flat on the floor. Image means a lot here. A few "anyong hasseyos" and "kamsa hamidas" with a little bow certainly don't hurt, either. |
