So, tell me about Malaysia. Found a decent fare to Kuala Lumpur. I have about a week, so am thinking of a day in KL, then off to somewhere beautiful and warm. So where should I go?

Go to Pangkor or Punang. I was on Pangkor and the beaches were nice. The water was warm. I will tell you that it can be boring. Even you like swimming alone and read books it would be a good place. If you are looking to hook up with other backpackers you are probably out of luck.

It may not be the kind of place you're looking for, but Singapore is just a cheap 6-hour bus ride away. If you've never been, it's definitely worth checking out if you're going to be in the neighborhood.

kuala lumpur is fun to check out for a couple of days ... decent clubs and night life, food, etc. there is a good hotel desk at the airport ... no need to book ahead. just tell them what your price range is from budget on up. they can get you a taxi into town as well (45 min ride if i remember correctly) ... not sure if i got ripped off on the taxi rate .... $15-20 if i remember correctly .... ringgets is the currency. pretty cheap in malaysia but not like thailand. things to see : petronas towers, china town, shopping and night clubs in the central downtown area (where you should stay).

unfortunately i was on a short layover and didn't have time to travel to other/ more beautiful areas.

went for christmas/new year's, including singapore and malaysia was beautiful...here's what i've got:

* if you're there in the rainy season (think you are), you might want to skip the perhentian islands on the east coast

* loved pulau langkawi - laid-back, touristy and relaxing but alive all at once. check out the reggae bar and the pizza place on the same strip as the irish pub. yum. of course, plenty of malaysian goodness too, including a superyummy indian place that knocked my socks off (had i been wearing some)

* teman negara - trek through some of the world's oldest rainforest, unaffected by the last ice age. rent the $4 boots, good for leeches. do the canopy walk. if you can spend more time, do.

* kuala lumpur - don't miss the batu caves. you can go up the petronas towers if you're there before 10 for free tickets. you can also go higher in the tower. see the muslim cemetary but dress appropriately (long sleeves, pants)

* definitely visit singapore, even if you only spend a day or two there. it's close and a flight is really cheap (or an overnight train if you'd prefer a more enviro-friendly option)

* i hear the cameron highlands are nice

* overnight trains and trains in general are cheap and excellent compared to many other countries.

* the amount of english will shock you after being in korea. don't get too used to it.

* alcohol isn't as hard to get as you might think, everything is dirt cheap and try durian but don't mix it with alcohol (beer is okay, liquor can be fatal)

I second pulau langkawi - absolutely loved it. Malaysia is gorgeous, diverse, friendly- just a great place to be. The food is fantastic and while it is a Muslim country in many ways its more open than Korea. Go. Youll have a ball.

I really liked Pangkor. Was there with a g/friend. Dead quiet, but ideal if you just want to chill and relax.

Langkawi is nice too, better beaches than Pangkor. more people and more built up.

I love Malaysia. It is my favourite country in SEA, or maybe even Asia. Friendly people and they don't try to screw you at every corner. Plus KL is a pretty modern place. I went to Tioman island during the off-season and loved it. Go, and enjoy the place.

The two biggest pluses to Malaysia is that they don't try to screw you as much as in many SE Asian countries and they actually can speak English.

Warm + English + Singapura + friendly/honest people + cheap expenses + hot chicks = why not spend your whole vacation there?
