A true teacher derives work satification from seeing his or her students make progress in the subject at hand.

I am considering a return to Korea as a public teacher for my second year but I do not know if I will be as effective as a teacher in a public school setting. With large classes, various levels of fluency in each classroom and less contact with students per week, why do teachers really work in public schools here in Korea.

Is it strictly for vacation time, an easier workload and none of the hakwon Bul$shit. Granted, I would like more time off and fewer classes but I do not know if that would substitute for seeing my students move from pre-beginners to intermediate speakers in a year.

So my question is this: which place is more conducive for teaching and learning English, the Hakwon or Public School?

Thanks

Oh for *beep* sake, not this again.

Good hogwan = faster, more noticeable results than public school.

Bad hogwan = pointless being there.

How much of Dave's do you have to read to figure this out?

Obviously not as much as you; but thanks for the information.

Well thanks at least for ensuring that yet again not another week went by without a hogwan vs. public school thread. Dave's just wouldn't be the same without it.

If you feel strongly about your narrow definition of success you will likely be unsatisfied at a public school. You will likely have very little time with each individual student.

I have set my public school goals as practicing pronunciation through drills, help students get used to listening to and understanding a native speaker, to inspire the students to take an interest in English and to encourage them to practice English outside of class.

You will likely have few chances to measure in quantitative terms if you are successful but you will get feedback in other ways and when it goes right it is not completely unsatisfying to meet those goals.

Good luck

Why are you coming back to Korea if you want to be a "true teacher?" Laughing

You must work at a hogwan. There are serious teaching jobs in this country, you have to go after them and be qualified.
