Stuff the class size there's nothing you can do, deal with it
im no expert but my older kids love competition i divide the class in half download some trivia from the net and give them a quiz, keep it simple.
My favourite is "why is the ocean salty" they usually come up with some crap story bout some old guy and a bag of salt....then i launch into my whole minerals letched from the mountains via the river... blah blah blah evapouration takes water from the ocean but not the salt therefore over time it gets saltier.... They really like it, they learn loads of new words i.e evapouration minerals etc....you get to draw cool pictures all over the board and you come of sounding like a genius!
another good one is the planets ie. Which is the biggest planet? which planet is closet to the sun, what is the closet star etc again you get to draw cool pictures when none of them can answer the questions.
also they like what river runs through Laos? London? which country is South of .....North of......
you can fill these lessons up with activities like colouring flags, capital city wordsearches etc a great site i use is http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html it rocks
If you need any more resource hints you can PM me ive got loads
then you throw a page from whatever book there using to keep the boss happy
you can probabally tell im bored and blabbing
hope it helps
