ok, I am heading to Korea in a few months with my bofriend. He is a Mexican citizen and English is not his native language. I am heading to seoul a few weeks before him hoping that he can basically crash at my apartment and maybe find work teaching Spanish. We are both ready to deal with his not being able to find a job, but the question is how long will he be able to stay in the country as a visitor? We are officially common-law for tax purposes etc, but Im sure that wont make it easier for him at all.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Wings

That's tough. REAL tough. I'd visit the immigration website ASAP, along with the Mexican Embassy.

I found this link with information about how long people from different countries can visit:

http://english.tour2korea.com/01TripPlanner/EntryInfo/entry.asp?konum=1&kosm=m1_2

so it looks like Mexicans can stay for 90 days. the follow up question that I have then is: Can you leave for a day and then come back and get 90 days again? I know that in some places now they have a mandatory 30 days between visits for people from some countries.

Thoughts?

thanks,
wings

I don't think it's such a big deal in Korea, but it seems like each immigration officer has their own opinion about it. For example, if one guy has a headache, he'll make you sit in the little immigration room at the airport, whereas another guy will let you right through.

I think they get suspicious when they see more and more tourist visas.

If he has a university degree he may be able to find work teaching Spanish here as there are a few hogwons in Seoul that offer Spanish classes.

He does have a degree and is hoping to find work teaching Spanish, But we are not really sure if it is a big possiblility. but it sounds like it might be not that hard for him to at least find part time work once we get there.

thanks

If you go to Jongro 2 ga in Seoul, to the side where Cheongyechon is, next to a little boutique named Dam fashion (huh huh DAMN! fashion), there is a little business that puts Spanish language Korean newspapers in a stand outside. It's near the intersection across from Youngpoon...sorry Yeongpoong bookstore.
