I was walking in a park a couple of months ago and got to watching some ducks swimming on a pond. This made me wonder if all birds float. This thought has been perplexing me for the past months. Is there anyone who knows the answer because I think they can. |

Think the OP might be a troll but what the heck...unfortunatley I don't know if all birds can float (but common sense dictates that some such as the ostritch probably cannot) but those that can float tend to posess webbed feet. |

Can't all swim; but all can float since an equal volume of water displaced must necessarily weigh more than the bird. The bird will sink until the weight of water it displaces is equal to its own weight.
This is why we float better when we take in air: we displace more water.
I must be bored. |

But the most important question is Holden's; Where do the ducks go in winter? |

Ducks can fly, Hanson. They go to sunnier places. |

I guess being a penguin, I'd be in the know.........
Actually, no... not all birds can float... Even ducks can sink if they are lacking the waterproofing oil in the feathers...
Growing up on a farm, we were given some young (adolescent) ducks that had been raised away from open water.... They'd never had the chance to swim,.... First thing we did (out of intended kindness) was to stick 'em on the dam... and watch them as they struggled to keep their heads above water... Apparently the waterproofing oil secretion is stimulated by exposure to water....
It took a couple of days before they could take to water like... ummmm...ducks to water... |

I think you might be missing the Holden Caulfield reference... |

On a related note, ever noticed that a lot of Koreans think that ducks can't fly? Try doing an informal poll of students or K-friends some time. |

I live in New York, and I was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park, down near Central Park South. I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where did the ducks go? I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them away to a zoo or something. Or if they just flew away.
