I'd like to introduce a new kind of activity to the forum to make things a bit more interesting: forecasts.
As of today (Sunday January 28, 2007) I'm going to make the following forecast: there will be many large-scale antiwar protests across the US this summer, mainly in the major cities.
To be more specific, I estimate - "bet" - there will be at least eight events of at least ten thousand protesters each, in the US, by the end of August.
If by the end of August, my forecast is inaccurate, I personally undertake to pay $20 by PayPal to an appropriate charity - suggestions from forum members for an appropriate charity are welcome.

I'll do my best to help you with your prediction. I suspect it will be a long hot summer.
Wait till they decide they actually need a draft for this fiasco. Then you will see the proverbial merde hit the fan. |

I am confident in at least this prediction: never happen; politically impossible for this president. |

I don't think that's an unreasonable opinion. My question is, what would protests achieve exactly? |

Yeah. Not a chance of a draft being instituted in the next two years. That's something I'd put money on. |

So to be more specific, I'm betting that between January 28th and the end of August, there will be at least eight major protests across the US "against the war", with "major" being defined as at least ten thousand participants/protesters in each event.
Hi Des, nice to see you!
I'm proposing this prediction as a sincere experiment: to see if one can predict political and social events with a reasonable degree of accuracy, regardless of how one feels on the issue. For example, I think there will be another NK nuclear test before the year is out, because I don't think the major circumstances and actors which caused the first one have changed. I could - and I hope - be wrong.
With regards to my original "bet"...I believe there will be a lot of protests against the presence of US troops in Iraq in the US, once the weather warms up. And I'm willing to bet $20 that my prediction will be true. If I'm wrong, I'll own up to it and pay the $20. I'm curious to see what will happen.

Americans dont care. All they care about is consuming. The old hippies have grown lazy, disinterested and fat and their kids dont give a damn. |

I doubt this. There may be new protests but unless military action looms i can't see it being that scale and size of protest. As such, when your prediction fails to come true I suggest you donate the money to LINK

Tell that to the thousands in the streets in the major cities here last week. There will be more. MOS is about right with the estimate, IMHO.
Hi Mos! |

Thousands that took to the streets? Are you on dope? Try 30,000 in DC and many many less elsewhere. If these folks can only mobilize a mere 30,000 or so, they are hardly a major force. With the way things are - no draft or "Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh is gonna win", they are a minor factor. No, not a minor factor- they are a major JOKE. |

I doubt there will be mass protests like there were 35 years ago. The difference between now and then is that the majority party in Congress is also against the war. I think the majority of people who are against the war will wait for Congress and the President to fight it out, while waiting for the Election of '08. |

Des,
I'm thinking once the weather warms up.
I think I might be overestimating by saying as many as eight major protests, between now and September...but I think it's going to be a long, noisy summer.
NAVC, Good suggestion. |
