For all those missing good theater or just wanting something different to do on the weekend (or during the week), I hereby inform you of a unique theatrical event, detailed below. Unique in no small part because it tells a story without language, rendering it accessible to interested parties of any nationality or linguistic persuarsion. I could say it's sort of like silent film, except on stage and Korean, but it's much easier to explain if you just come see it. If you would like more information or have specific questions (after reading below), feel free to PM me. Tickets are available by reservation, but more conveniently at the door. Unless the show becomes unexpectedly popular, showing up 20 mins. early should secure you a seat.

The Angel and the Woodcutter
Directed by Park Chung-Euy
Performed at: Hakchon Blue Theater, February 2-11, 2007
Weekdays 8pm / Sat. 4pm & 7:30pm / Sun. 4pm (no performance Mon., Feb. 5)
Tickets: 20,000\ regular / 15,000\ students / 10,000\ preview (Feb. 2, 3, and 4)

Dramatic Company Cho-In has toured world-wide, from England and France to Egypt and Armenia, with their award-winning production "The Train", in the process attracting an international following. Now back in Korea, its latest offering of innovative physical theater, Seonnyeo oa Namukkun (The Angel and the Woodcutter), puts a twist on a classic Korean fairy tale. Based on the fable of a woodcutter who traps a heavenly being on earth to be his bride, this adaptation moves the action to a world where civilization has disintegrated and violence reigns. Despite hiding deep in montane forests, this catches up with the woodcutter, his mother, and his captive wife. As they confront and are torn apart by outside forces, they must also face their own acts of violence. Drawing on diverse styles, from traditional Korean dance to Chaplinesque mime, and performed without language to an original score performed live on traditional Korean instruments, this is powerful, contemporary theater unlike anything else you have seen.

Due to some sexual content and violence, this production may not be appropriate for young children.

Directions to Hakchon Blue Theater:
Make your way by subway, bus, or taxi (private car is possible, but parking is very limited) to Hyehwa Station (Line 4). From Exit 1 or 2 head toward Paris Baguette, and turn onto the side street, away from TaeHangRo. Take the 4th right and it is in the second building on your right. (If you or a loved one can read Hangul, the map at

may prove helpful.)

I'll be there!!! Very Happy

It does sound like a worthwhile way to spend some time for not too much money.

Sorry, but I'm gonna keep bumping this all week, and probably next... (barring intervention by the mods, of course). Although I don't know that these middle-of-the-night bumps do much good...

That's disappointing news.

I kept looking for the Chinese teacher at school all day yesterday because I thought this would be something both of us could see and enjoy. Back to the drawing board for something to do with a new friend. Sad

Uhh... No you didn't. I'm not aware of anyone capable of posting a grammatically or syntactically correct reply who's seen it, besides myself (and I'm part of the company). And if I'm mistaken, well, what did you dislike about it? Strangely enough, I've noticed that our shows actually tend to be even more popular with westerners than Koreans, although this one has had some Korean members of our audience in tears by the end. Are you thinking of something else though? Because I'd be really surprised if you have seen a rehearsal. And when did you see it? Besides that, it was, after all, a work in progress up until opening night, and what you may have seen was in all likelihood quite different from the actual performance. Now that lights, music, and sound are all cooridinated and part of the mix, that's almost certainly the case. Although, unless you prove me wrong (what do I look like?; PM me and I'll verify here if you know something that I haven't posted on Dave's before), I suspect that you just said that because you were bored and feeling malicious... Question

Yes. Yes it is. If you're interested in seeing a modern Korean theatrical interpretation of a traditional Korean fairy tale, come. If you're not, you're missing out. Wink

In sum, I've seen this show more times than any of you could if you came to every performance and I'm still enjoying it. In fact, now that it's in the theater, it's better than ever. It may not be for everyone, but what theater is? Ya-Ta Boy, obvioulsly I'm biased, but I think you should come with your friend. If you want to know more, please PM me.

(edited for unnecessary snarkiness... Sorry vanIslander. Not sorry billyblibelous.)

bump again (one week left, come and see it before it's too late! Or, if you're Scottish and going home soon, wait until we come to Edinburgh... ) I'm in the process of making up English language inserts for the program, including the story. If you like theater, it will definitely be worth your while. Hope to see you there.

I caught the Seoul Players this weekend (at Hanyang university). They did some play about Alfred Hitchcock and the male obsession with blondes. The description of the play sounded dull and stupid but I figured there must be a reason to stage the play. It ended up being pretty decent. The male actors were pretty good. The women actors were community theater quality. There was nudity. If it's been a while since you've seen a naked white woman...

That play sounds interesting. Is it still running? Will it still be running next week?
