i'm arriving in seoul in late february and i have about 3 days before i head to my rural teaching position. i want to see the big city cause its going to be a while before i see street lights again!

i don't drink, probably won't do any clubs on this trip, but looking for advice more along the lines of museums, cafes, restaurants, quirky shops. also, good neighborhoods to visit and best places to stay.

thanks!

unless you work saturdays you could travel almost anywhere in this country on the weekends

the trains, buses and ferries are convenient comfortable fast and CHEAP

I live almost on the southern coast (less than 30 min. away) and yet I make a once-a-month-or-so trip up to Seoul. 4 hours and 25,000 won.

So don't start thinking you are too rural. Chances are a bus goes to a bigger community and from there, anywhere!

How far from Seoul will you be living? I live an hour away and go to Seoul most weekends. I shouldn't try to pack too much sightseeing into your three days; there really will be opportunities to see the place in time. The train and bus system are cheap and generally regular. I suppose if you were living in very small town this might be a small problem in terms of regularity. Also the underground system is cheap and easy to use (after a few visits).

best of luck

If you haven't been to Asia before, there are plenty of palaces to see right downtown, all very close to each other. There really aren't cafes here. They have Starbucks, but I don't think that is what you want. You can go to the National Museum. I haven't been there but it is HUGE, so there must be something good in there. You can also try the war museum, it has some big statues out front that look good. For walking around, the City Hall area and East of that are pretty good, as is the EWHA Women's University area, lots of quirky shops there.
