They work! Very Happy I just got back from a 5 week vacation trip to Florida. I was in a drug store and thought, "hey! let me see if my card works here!" Lo and behold, it did (this was 3pm Florida time, 5am Korean time). So, those of you wanting a good bank with good transfer rates and people that will help you, go to KEB.

Me. Smile

You should have no problem with KEB. Thankfully, they seem to know what's going on in respect to Korean banking laws. Good luck to you.

The big question is; When was the OP issued his card?

My KEB guy says the only way to get an international card with a visa or mastercard logo is to have the secured credit card.

I'd like to add that KB****s(Kookmin Bank) issued me an international card then called me up the next day and told me I couldn't have it because I wasn't Korean. So it got deactivated. KB****s can suck my **** I'm going to try the farmers the next time.. I think on these boards I've heard the best results from the farmer's banks. Nonghyup here I come. Internationalize me so I can hub myself around the world.

Hi Diver,

I was issued the card a year ago. However, my two colleagues, whom I took to the bank just last August and October, got the same card I did. So, they too can use the cards.

Really though, I think it is a matter of how they perceive you. If you look like a "backpacker", "tree-hugger", an outright nasty person, someone with an attitude, etc., then they will most likely give you the cold shoulder. The SAME thing happens in North America, it's just hidden from plain view.

On the other hand, if you walk in there clean cut with a smile and what not then you probably have a better chance of getting what you want.

Of course there are other factors to consider as well such as the people working, their moods, etc. In all honestly, Many Korean banks do not know the exact laws regarding foreigners and bank transactions. Furthermore, there is nothing that says you cannot discriminate against a foreigner. So, in essence, they can look at you and be like "ehhhh....nawwwwww". And there you go, no bank card.

A sad reality I tell you. But I will tell you one thing, these people that come on Dave's and say, "I just told off my bank..yada yada yada", well, if I were the person in the bank and someone started yelling at me, hehehhee, I would do my darnest to make sure he or she did NOT get what they needed, especially if I could discriminate against them legally. You just have to play the game and have to find someone willing to play the game with you.

My International KB card didn't work in a Thai ATM last week. Luckily I have a secured credit card from them that also doubles as an ATM card and that worked just fine.

I asked because (from what I've read on the forums) that cards issued before the new 'law' went into effect work, while cards issued afterwards don't.

I asked for an international card at KEB and was told it was impossible. They suggested I get the secured credit card instead for use in 'must have' cash situations overseas. They never mentioned that the secured credit card was a requirement for getting an international ATM card. However, two branches of the same bank giving out completely different information is nothing new in Korea. I'll ask about an international ATM card the next time I am in.
