I just got this from a friend of mine in the Air Force. Not sure if it's been mentioned anywhere else.

Effective immediately, Commander, United States Forces Korea designates the Hongdae/Hongik University area in Seoul temporarily off-limits to USFK service members, civilian employees, contractor employees, and their family members between the hours of 2100 - 0500 daily in order to increase the safety and protection of USFK personnel. The potential for threats against USFK personnel in this area remains high.

Yeah, some 67-year-old Korean woman might rape a GI again.

ha. nice one dogbert.

but isn't that mainly after curfew anyways? how does the curfew work by the way? are some ranks exempt? and will they be sending anybody over to enforce it? and what will become of Stomper's and Route 66 without the steady patronage of our fine young men and women of the armed forces?

Curfew is late, like 2am, but usually public transportation means they have to leave earlier to make it. Or, conversely, if they miss curfew, they have to stay out until morning when the gates open (and they won't get in trouble usually).

Hongdae was off-limits a few years ago and it didn't do much to reduce the number of soldiers around. I don't think this ban will keep any of my friends away.

The off-limits designation for Hongdae has been in effect since the summer of 2004. It was deemed off-limits because of drugs and the lax enforcement on underaged drinking (there was an incident awhile ago where a soldier and a high school student from YHS were fighting and the student got her face slashed and an ex-coworker was arrested and court-marshalled for doing "E" in Hongdae)

As for enforcing it, it is almost impossible to enforce like in Itaewon where the MPs accompany the KNPs who are also followed by the end of the night by CPs and SDOs and SDNCOs from the YongSan TOC and EUSA S3 Wink

So....You've also heard of GIs prostituting themselves too?
It was uncanny when I heard it for the first time, and from a Korean that worked at the Provost Marshal's office too Shocked
