I am teaching middle and high school students how to write expository essays for the TOEFL test, and ostensibly for their University entrance examinations. I've been unsuccessful finding any kind of guidelines for what exactly the various Universities are looking for regarding their English language essays.
Does anybody know...
a) which schools require an English essay?
b) what faculties require an English essay?
and c) what are the grading criteria?

I have heard conflicting rumors from students and teachers, and was wondering if anybody has anything to add. I really want to prepare my students as well as I can, and would dearly love to know what exactly will be expected of them.
