Va. slave apology debate raises tensions By DIONNE WALKER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jan 30, 2:09 PM ET

RICHMOND, Va. - When an 80-year-old white Virginia legislator recently came out against a resolution apologizing for slavery because blacks, he said, should "get over it," he ignited a storm of protests from black leaders.

The furor has illustrated once more that when the issue is race, the past is never far from the surface in Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy and a city where one of the main boulevards is lined with grand statues of Southern heroes such as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart.

Two black legislators Sen. Henry L. Marsh III and Delegate Donald McEachin have proposed that the General Assembly "acknowledge with contrition" the state's role in slavery. McEachin said an apology would promote healing and ease the sadness felt by many descendants of slaves.

[I am not so sure an apology would solve the problems with gangs, drop outs... I am not really opposed to the apology in terms of the government saying mistakes were made that divided people and sons of America including slavery and we must work together to help all prosper but all need to work and be productive. That is as far as I would go.]

Rather than squabble about something that stopped 150 years ago, I think everyone would be better off if all sides united in an effort to stop the modern version.

For once, I agree with you. We should end affirmative action policies now!

If all your posts were this mercifully short, I might actually read some of them.

Yes, we should dig deep into the history of slavery and demand reparations from those who ancestors enslaved our ancestors.

So let's have the African American Reparations Committee and Cornel West demand reparations from the Arab countries, since they were trading Africans long before the Europeans.

Let's demand payment from the British for bringing them to America's eastern shore in the first place.

And, to be FAIR, let's demand that African tribes who enslaved their black brothers or abetted Arab and European slave traders, also pay their dues.

Funny, those places don't have quantitative evidence that it's almost entirely inertia dating back to slavery that keeps blacks from having a hand in, uh, anything.
