I was told that a telephone line isn't necessary when getting internet connection in korea and that all I'd need to get is some "cable." is this true?
also, what type of contracts do they offer? woud I have to pay by the month? how much should I expect to pay? are there downloading caps? |

They meant a cable modem. I'm going to let someone else answer the other questions because mine was done for me by someone else.

Talk to your school. I asked my school. They had someone from Korean telecom over within a week. I've had cable TV and Internet ever since
I pay about 30,000 a month for both Cable TV and Internet. |

Welcome to 1999. The Internet no longer runs through phone lines.
Don't ask your school. Ask a Korean friend to hook you up, or even your landlord if you can communicate with them. At my first job, my boss told me my (very modern) building wasn't wired for the Internet. A few months later, my landlords told me I was the only one in the building without a connection. |

broadband markets are really competitive these days so you can find nice offers...
i think all those companies have similar qulity? (not sure)
for mine, i had one year contract
first month for free, got a microwave and 30,000 cash after paying my first bill! and i pay 36,000 monthly only for the broadband
my friend said i'm paying too much, think i've been ripped off
ask some korean friends to find the best option!
it took me 2 days to have it connected by the way |

in Gwangju you dial 100, wait thru the Korean msg and eventually there is an English menu. My friend said their English was spot on and were able to do everything she asked. |

You may find that the internet company won't set up an internet connection for you without it being arranged through whoever owns your apartment, which is probably your school.
This was the case for me and, unfortunately, my supervisor is a hapless dope with a head full of broken biscuits. On the ninth request she did finally make the call and high speed broadband arrived at my home within a day. However, she did not shop around for a good price and so I am left paying a ridiculous 52000 won a month. Another example of foreigners being screwed sideways by greedy and/or indifferent Koreans. |

Pay by the month. One year or two year contract, but on teh occasion that you leave midcontract, you could prepare something like a letter from the school that says you have left Korea, and maybe some other documents. I guess that depends on the company. |

I called Thrunet myself. They had English speaking service people in the call center and were able to set me up over the phone, and sent a technician to my place with 2 days.
Thrunet was just purchased by Hanaro, though, so I don't know if they provide the same foreigner-friendly service. |

What's the deal on cable and internet packages?
Who sells them (KT, Hanaro, etc.)? Are they available in non-metro areas? What kinds of stations are offered?
I live out in the boondocks. I'm paying KT just over 30K/month for high-speed internet. Since I only get like 4 Korean language TV stations, cable would add another way for me to procrastinate and otherwise piss away my free time. |

Note to self:
Buy stock tomorrow in Korean companies that offer high-speed internet/cable TV packages. |
