I went to bed late Saturday morning after chatting with Dad and woke up late in the day and was hungry. I took a shower and decided to go to E*Mart to get some spaghetti and rolls, and maybe even a bottle of Pepsi.
It was almost dusk when I left my apartment and the Headquarters Intelligence Detachment wagon was already outside of the apartment building. They usually come around dark. I live close to Gangdong station in Seoul, on the corner of the intersection opposite Shinhan bank. I planned on getting some spaghetti at the E-Mart at Cheonho station, since they sell it for 1,800 won, a 10% discount from buying it at the GS25. Also, I wanted some bread and perhaps some cola. Boring? Yes. But it was how I planned on spending my Saturday night, nonetheless.
I was almost to the stairway to the walkway that goes under the road to the side that has E-Mart when I heard a man screaming. As I began to descend the stairway, I noticed a guy about a quarter of the way down and when he saw me, he made a beeline toward me. Surprisingly, he biatchslapped me while screaming in my face. As I began to push him away, he had his hand on my face again and one of his fingers was pressing against my right eye.
After I got some separation, I began to do a very rapid appraisal of the situation. I wasn't sure exactly what the guy had in mind or why, but I knew that being in a foreign country, I needed to play things conservatively. The things that stood out in my mind immediately were as follows:
1. A lot of Koreans were around, and I didn't know what story they would tell the police or if they would jump in to help the Korean if I cranked up a counteroffensive.
2. We were just meters away from a KB bank, so I knew that whatever I did would most likely be on their security camera.
3. There was definitely only one of me, but I stood the risk of getting blindsided if the Korean had any buddies around, and I was also worried that Koreans who didn't even know the guy would possibly fight on his behalf.
4. He had already lost the element of surprise. If he attacked again, it wouldn't be a surprise like it was the first time. More importantly, I noticed that he was wearing a lot of make-up. I'm a redneck that spent many a day farming tobacco from daylight until dark throughout my childhood. While I know that there are millions of men in the world who can kick my azz, I was supremely confident that he was not one of them. Still, I had read horror stories about foreigners who had kicked azz in self-defense and had to pay their assailant thousands upon thousands of dollars. This was my #1 concern.
It was really a horrible situation to be in.
Fortunately, he ended up flipping a bird while saying "Puck you," and walked off. I was on my way to E-Mart, but noticed my right eye was watering from the guy getting his finger in it. At that point, I got really pissed off.
I remembered that there was a police station at the gate of the Cheonho Red Light District nearby, so I went there to make a report. I felt like it was probably a waste of time, but I wanted to do it anyway. An English-speaking officer I spoke with was patient and polite and took all of the information. I was actually happy with the police until...
I was outside of the door and was saying goodbye to the officer when I surprisingly heard Boy George yelling just as he had earlier. I was really surprised, but I guess it's a small world. I told the policeman, "That's him. That's the guy. I would recognize that yell anywhere." Sure enough, there he came out of the sidestreet...
Two older officers had me get in the back seat of their car and I figured the three of us were going to go to Boy George. Boy was I wrong. I was wrong in a big way.
They drove past him and were driving down that little one-way street in Cheonho near E*Mart where all of the nightclubs are. I drew a lot of attention. People were pointing and having their friends look. I was too consumed with the cops catching Boy George to pay much attention to being a public spectacle, which was made worse by a traffic jam. These two cops didn't know any English, but I kept pointing toward the direction where Boy had been.
I was wondering where on Earth we were going. First, I thought they were driving to the KB bank where the guy had bitchslapped me, as I told them some guys were hanging out outside of the KB and may still be there as witnesses. When they passed the KB and continued onward, my curiosity was stoked tenfold. They drove past Gangdong station and I thought maybe they were dropping me off at my apartment, especially after they turned right onto my street. They passed my apartment and the HID wagon and kept driving. At that point, I was really wondering what in the Hell was going on. I thought back to a post on Dave's where a foreign lady had reported that an African-American had been assaulted by some Koreans and was thrown in jail along with the African-American victim. I was so puzzled about what was going on that I couldn't really start to worry about what would happen because I didn't know what was going on, so I didn't know what to worry about. It was so dumb.
Finally, these Keystone Kops of Korea (KKK) stopped their kar at the side of the road beside a big police station in Gangdong. Then, we sat there for a few minutes. Finally, they called someone on their cell phone and was talking to them. The Kop in the passenger seat handed the phone to me and a lady who spoke pretty good English told me that the Kops at the Red Light District Station couldn't find Boy George. Ok, now I was really pissed. She wanted my name and I gave it to her. The Kops wanted my phone number, but I don't have a phone. Then, they wanted my office number, so I wrote down the name of the school where I work. They repeated that they wanted the office number there, but I (genuinely) didn't know it.
They finally took me to the KB bank and dropped me off. I was very relieved that I didn't have to spend the night in jail like the African-American victim and his foreign witness.
Although I considered myself lucky, I was pissed that they let Boy George off the hook. I was having none of that, especially after all of the time I had already invested.
I walked down the sidewalk at the KB bank, went down into Cheonho station, and came out on the side of E*Mart. I looked around and then went toward the area near the police station where I heard him yelling. Lo and behold, right across the street from the Red Light District Police Department, there was Boy George...this time, in some sort of physical altercation with an overweight white guy who didn't have on a shirt. I don't know if the white guy had taked it off or if BG had ripped it off.
I jaywalked and hauled azz to the RLDPD, threw open the door like Kramer on Seinfeld, and pointed right at Boy George who was across the street. I don't even know how they didn't see what was going on before I pointed it out, as they have a big glass door and it was happening right across the street. A couple of cops got on their car and turned on their lights. At that point, Mr. George started walking down the sidewalk, but should have been easy prey for cops in a car. However, the KKK turned right and went down a side street. I could not believe it, despite the glaring displays of incompetence they had already shown throughout the evening.
I went back inside the office and pointed toward the direction Boy George was walking and an old Kop behind the desk told me to leave. A young lady waiting in a seat translated for me, but the old Kop was having none of it. He told me to leave. I tried to explain one more time and the girl pointed in the direction that Boy George was walking and the Kop barked something at her, then glared at me and told me to leave. I went ahead and left, because I felt like I was getting dangerously close to getting arrested for trespassing.
I started walking home and there was that mutherphucker again, still screaming. I don't know if the guy was drunk, on drugs, or just has serious mental issues. As fate would have it, there was a Kop Kar with two KKK members in it. I told them that the guy yelling had assaulted me earlier that night. The Kop in the passenger seat said, "OK," and they drove in Boy George's direction, but drove right past him. At that point I gave up and walked home.
When I got home, the HIDmobile was still there, so I wrote a note pleading for some actual police assistance. I wrote that two people had been physically assaulted in broad daylight by the same man, and that no police had done anything so far. I explained that I had done a lot of legwork in pointing out the guy three times, but facetiously explained that the Cheonho police had too much on their hands already with the scores of brothels operating right behind their station. Then, I stuck the note under a windshield wiper of the HIDmobile.
I'm going to the KB bank in Cheonho first thing Monday morning and will try to get video footage of the actual biatchslap. I still have a checking account, a money market account, and a foreign currency account at KB, so maybe they'll let me have the video footage if I'm lucky. If I can get it, I'll put it on YouTube for the RLDPD and all y'all on Dave's to watch. |

Nothing will be done by the police, except for maybe calling my employer and making me look like the criminal, since they were really wanting the office number.
To the white dude who was in the altercation with Boy George: If you're in Dave's Cafe and see this message, please PM me. I'll keep anything you send confidential. |

Godamn man.. it's hard to believe how incompetent the police here are. Sorry to hear that happened to you. I'd be pissed for sure. Hell, I'm a little pissed and it wasn't even me.
But you have to consider that maybe the boy george character was giving free hand and blow jobs to the cops in exchange for invisibility. Is there a sauna nearby? |

The moral of this story is...
When assaulted by a Krazy Korean:
1 - Punch him in the throat and/or box his ears.
2 - Kick him in the nuts.
3 - Run like hell. |

That's not the worst. Read other threads on violence against Koreans. If you are concerned about your earning potential as you say in other threads, you'll think again.
The moral of the story is to do what RJJr did. Prevent damage to yourself as non-violently as possible. If you want, try reporting it to the police; it would be great if they did something, but don't expect it. Get on with your life. I
I love it when foolish newbies say, "Where I come from, respect is earned..." and threaten to beat the crap out of somebody. I always wait for the threads on how much blood money they are paying and how much time they are spending in lockup.
You say in the other thread that you have 8 years of experience. How old are you anyway?
PS to RJJr. Sorry this happened to you. You handled it the best way possible. |

Gee Woland aren't you a judgemental SOB........I may be new to you but certainly not to the world or human nature or how it works.........(I was born at night, not last night.......)
And perhaps, unlike you, I have taught for 8 years in the US.......and as for how old I am, what a fool you are......as though age necessarily has a direct correlation to wisdom..........but since you asked, I am old enough not only to out think you but experienced enough to drop you like a bag of dirt (good analogy).............
And if you wonder why foreigners continue to be taken advantage of it is because of *beep* boys like you...............YOU LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blood money is for suckers and as for the lock-up, I am unafraid. No doubt you are one of those whiney sophmoric know it alls who could go on about Nelson Mandela, and tell us what a moderm martyr and man of peace he was. Quite true. But unlike you, Mandela and I would go to the lock-up for a cause that was right and just.
Use of the local constabulary is very much preferred. But when and if it is designed or not powerful enough to keep the common peace, enforce civil authority, and uphold the law reasonably and equally, then justice ultimately lies within the citizenry and the common man (Jefferson), to mete out justice when, where and as often as is necessary.
So please go back under the rock you came from and leave the thinking to those of us who can. Geez......what an a**hole you are man......... |
