i joined a gym as soon as soon as i arrived here, but have unfortunately found those deep fried pork/chicken type sticks covered in chilli sauce sold just below my apartment the perfect post gym snack!!
have gained a fair few pounds in just two months & wondered how people avoid the deep fried trap when hunger calls.
at home i usually snack on crumpets or pitta type snacks or cup a soups.
i naively thought i would lose weight here without bread
HELP!! |

When you have finished exercising at the gym, drink as much water as you can possibly hold, and bring a bottle of water with you, and drink some more as you pass the snackie-snack places on your way home. You may have to run to the toilet more often but think of the advantages of this plan! |

You can get bags of apples (not the huge ones) for a fair price. I love peanut butter and apple. Cut up the apple...leave the skin on as it has fiber and nutrients...and just dip it in the peanut butter with each bite. Both of those ingredients are healthy and I find the two flavors go together well, the sweetness of the apple first, then the peanuty (should it be peanutiness??) of the peanut butter. Give it a try.  |

Sliced apple with ciinnamon sprinkled on it -- even nicer.
Compared to the U.S., most fruit in Korea is cheaper and of better quality. The supermarkets are more expensive than the street or open markets though.
Drinking water as you work out and just before leaving the gym is an excellent way to fill full. Most people are dehydrated(sp?) without even knowing it. |

Peanut butter-healthy? I disagree. It's got a massive hit of fat, salt and sugar. The big 3! A couple tablespoons of that a couple times a day can put on the weight on in no time. |

Put a protein bar in your bag and start eating it before you pass the fried food vendors. I second the water suggestion, too. |

Protein bars exist in Korea?
I would say bring some Chromium Picolinate, they suppress the appetite. But you can' find that in Korea either. |

Fruits don't have to be expensive. You just have to avoid department store, supermarket and small local stores. Go to your local fresh produce market, you can get a huge bag of mandarin oranges for 5,000 won, or 4 huge pairs for 5,000 won and like 8 apples for also 5,000 won. I think those are OK prices.
Bananas are quite cheap now, too. 2,000 won for a huge bunch.
I'd say that if you want a sweet kick, you should do what Oprah has taught us all to do and what I do sometimes, too - dried fruits and a handful of cereals like bran or something, eat them without milk or water... really yummy and easy on the stomach. |

1. Cereal and skim milk or yogurt (small bowl)
2. A small handful of nuts or dried fruit
3. A small, plain yogurt
4. A banana or orange
Hmmm...most of this stuff is not stuff you'd buy on the street. I guess this involves planning ahead. Splurging on crap from the street or convenience store because you're ravenous is not ideal so bring something from home! |
