I don't know the official definition, but I'm fairly sure I'm not a fully fledged insomniac...
However, I do have some kind of sleeping disorder and have had for my whole life... My Dad does too actually.
I tend to sleep normally for periods of 3-4 months and then for the next 3-4 months I have immense trouble getting to sleep, wake every hour or so, and have been known to go a few days with no sleep at all. But then after a few months I'll be fine again. It goes in cycles like that.
I wish I'd gone to a doctor years ago, and now I'm in Korea, and seeking medical help seems like such a daunting task...
So, does anyone have any knowledge they could pass on? I'm sure there are ways i can help myself with lifestyle changes.
I am also prone to migrains (sp?) and never remember dreams... Don't know how relevant that is.. |

I am insomniac as well. 5:25 am currently and I"m wide awake
As far as I know most large university hospitals have a sleep observation clinic and some sort of dr who specializes in that area. My husband use to snore terribly and it didn't help my insomnia any. He spent a night at the sleep clinic trying to figure out why he snored. He went to the ENT department. I assume an insomniac could be treated in the Psychiatry or other depts as well. |

You could try going to the International Health Centre at Severance hospital. It is located near Dogok Stn (shuttle bus from stn.) in Gangnam.
I've found them to be very helpful, but I am not sure what insomnia treatment would entail. |

I've been up since 4:00 A.M., myself (after going to sleep at 1:30).
What have you tried so far? |

Are you getting physical exercise everyday?
Try eating a bowl of lettuce 30 mins before you sleep (lettuce is called 'nature's valium'...altho' less addictive ).
Camomile tea with honey is supposed to be good as is hot milk with honey.
I hope one or all of these work for you.
Sweet dreams! |

Do these bouts tend to hit you during the winter months? If so, you could be suffering from a mild form of Seasonal Affected Disorder. I rotate on light meds during the winter months to help regulate my sleep schedule. If not, I turn into a frickin' vampire. |

If you have trouble getting to sleep, but staying asleep is not a problem, you could consider Stilnox. It's non-addictive and it requires a prescription. I think it's called Ambien in North America. There's no hangover at all. It's a hypnotic and it takes about 15 minutes to kick in. It's pretty easy to get. |

Yes, the wonders of Stilnox.
I have had insomnia for years, and I just got Stilnox on Friday.
I am happy to say it works. I went to the doctor, told him I had insomnia, and I was out of the office in 5 minutes.
Scares me that I had to fill out no past medical history, nor an examination of any kind either.
Just walked in, said I had insomnia, and a doctor sitting in front of the computor asks me how many days I want it for. I said a month, and he shook his head.
ta-da. |

I was about to say the exact same thing. I have mild Seasonal Affective Disorder, which was actually much worse in the States. It hasn't been too bad here, because I walk 20-30 minutes to work and am otherwise outside much longer that I am back home. The sunlight's good for those with SAD (what an obnoxious acronym, by the way).
Other things that help are making sure you have a healthy diet, and sticking to a sleep routine. Make sure you go to bed (or at least attempt to go to bed) and get up at the same time every day. It's sort of a pain to do, but it really does help. |

Before opting for drugs, have you tried the obvious things, i.e. exercise, avoid caffeine and nicotine, don't eat sugary foods? |

it is a home remedy to dine on RAW ONIONS at bedtime.
I"ve not tried it, but it is worth a try. The natural chemicals in onions
may help you to relax.
Be sure to cut and dice the onions properly and dip it in oyster sauce. |
