Hi,

Sorry if this topic has been done before, but is anybody else getting really worried about global warming? I mean, the reports that have been coming from scientist are really starting to set the alarm bells going off in my head. Study after study seems to be indicating that things are not looking good. I was back in Canada for Christmas and the weather was just fucked up. It was so warm. I had been colder in Hong Kong just before I left.

I'm hoping that because this topic seems to really be taking a prominent place in the media and in general conversation, that this is a sign that something will happen to change things.

I know global warming affects all countries, but this article talks about the possible effects that might be seen in Canada.

Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth has a glacier of information about global warming. I highly recommend it. (torrent here)

The thing that I worry about is the way it's been made into a political issue. For the love of god, we are all on this earth together, why would we make global safety an issue of controversy? I don't mean people arguing the best methods, either. I'm talking about people arguing that it is no problem. That's so incredible.

In Al Gore's presentation, he points out that in the past 10 years, no researchers have said that global warming may not be happening, but that in the popular media, about 50% of articles do say that. That was saddening to hear.

Am I worried about it? I guess. If a catastrophe occurs, we'll either die or deal with it. Maybe we will have to start building aqua cities.

The sad thing is that the skeptics will remain skeptics even after Miami is under 20 feet of ocean. "Ah, it's just a natural cycle... nothing to worry about folks."

Well, if Jesus doesn't first, of course!! Wink Did you watch Jesus Camp?

I find it totally unbelievable that so little is done to counter global warming. Especially by the people who really can do something if they wanted to. Governments. Talk about sticking your head in the sand!

There seems to be a real determination by the economic powerhouses across the world, led by the USA, to use every drop of oil they can find for as long as they can find it. Jeez, I'd even prefer nuclear power at this point!

I also genuinely believe that laws should be passed forbidding private motor vehicles with engines larger than 2.0 liters. If you really need a more powerful vehicle for your business then a special licence could be granted. The people who go out and buy 6.0 liter SUV's and pick-up's seem to not care one iota about the quality of air right now and how bad it's going to get in the future. Selfish. Real selfish.

"global warming" is simply a change in the total amount of energy in the earth-atmosphere system. the increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere results in a lower rate re-emission by the earth-atmosphere system of the energy from the sun. thus the equator warms more than normal. to counter balance this increase the poles radiate away more heat to keep the total energy in balance. this requires more transport of cold air south and warm air north. the east coast of the usa, particularly upstate new york, has been much warmer and had more rain than snow this year than in past years. its rare that temperatures in missouri are in the mid to upper 50's in January as they have been this year. we got our first shot of cold air this week and it only dropped into the upper 20's
the extremes in weather are merely an expression of the imbalance that currently exists. there is little doubt in the scientific community that "global warming" exists, there are small dis-agreements about the precise mechanisms behind the increases in CO2 in the scientific community. what to do about about the causes is not a scientific problem and best left to the community at large. unfortunately the community at large has been fed far too much manure to understand the problem. my 2 cents.
