How much is a good amount to stick in the envolope? The guy I replaced at my job is getting married and he was a big help in getting me moved in and suchlike, so I don't want to be cheap...

I think that 50,000 ~ 100,000 is quite acceptable.

That sounds about right. I've been advised odd multiples of 10000 are standard, starting at 30000 for a passing acquaintance. A small additional wrapped gift is a nice gesture too.

My wife and I usually buy a 200-300,000won gift for friends @ weddings. We have had a few lately....a rice cooker and a microwave go over well.

The envelope cash I have a problem with though. At our wedding (I assume all other Korean ones); there is the money table to hand over the coin.....
this money went to my wife's family not the bride and groom(us). *even though in our situation there was no cash dished out by them*

If you want to give 100,000 or so..put it in a small envelope and give it to your bud when you shake his hand after the ceremony. That way it goes to him for real.
