One of my hobbies is hydroponic gardening. I use many widgets like the ones posted here.
http://www.midwesthydroponics.com/products/hydro_products.asp?category=20
As a typical non thinking consumer, I purchased the widgets faithfully for a long time until one day I got tired of 3 hour round trip to purchase drippers here in Korea or the expense and time of having them shipped internationally.
The drippers gave me agony. They clogged regularly and were a pain to unclog and then replace. The drippers are designed to fit snugly and they do. It takes a crowbar to get them out. That sucks. I wanted to replace the drippers. Making something leak is real easy. This should be a simple task.
I shop at the tool and material mart in Eujiro Sam-ga every Satuday. I try to design things in my head as a I see the materials. I got some vinyl hose a few times but the vinyl was different every time. Turns out there are many types of "vinyl" and all have different properties. That's good. Some clog well, some don't.
Next to the hoses were "cores" or tubes that are solid. I experimented with several variations of tube plugging but the simplest way won. Just stuff the core in the tube and it leaks just right. Its even adjustable. Bango. Adjusting the drip is easy and they clog much much less.
The drippers on the page above cost $.45. My new dripper costs $.005 Less than a penny how ever you measure it.
Why is this bad? Selling these things looks like a winner, they'll sell but 10 of these things will cost $.05.
How do you make money on that? |

| Peppers because they are challenging to grow. Tomatoes do well so I stopped growing them as do cukes. Melons didn't do well last summer so I'm trying those again as well. Are you making a Cheech and Chong joke? |
