I was wondering.. if i were to go to korea first and look for a job would i still be offered housing? Or do they think since i came by myself ishould find housing by myself?
another question: is it easy to find a job after arriving in korea by myself? |

I don't think it makes a difference. I would recommend you get a cell phone ASAP after you get here, though. Not having one seem to bewilder potential employers quite a bit.

I haven't found that to be the case, although it was my understanding before I came here that it's better to be here when looking for a job. IME, however, employers merely see you as desperate if you are willing to come here on your own dime. Unless you have unlimited resources, they know you need a job soon and will drill you about how long you've been here, why you came, and where you're staying. They more desperate they perceive you, the worse the job offer.

To counterbalance Ellas post...coming here on your own can be a huge advantage in job hunting if you do your homework before coming over and know what you want.
Also, if you come over with no local experience, you need to be realistic in expectations without of course taking just any job out there.... |

Well you'd have to find a place to stay while you were looking, of course. But most schools offer housing as part of the standard contract, and I doubt any potential employers would remove that from the contract just because you're already in Korea. You'd just move from your temporary housing to the school-provided place. |

| I would stay put in your home country and sift through offers from recruiters. Why pay airfare. I know after your first year here it is better to secure a job while you are in Korea, but to come here FOB and think your going to get something substantially better with no KOREAN experience, you are rolling the dice. |

Apartments come standard with hogwan jobs. Hogwans are a great way to start out and gain experience. The standard hogwan job will prepay your airfare to Korea, provide you an apartment free of charge (although you will be responsible for utilities and other fees) and give you a job without ever meeting you, based on your resume and picture.
The downside is that the apartment might not meet your standards, you might not be cut out to be a teacher, and you might not mesh with the hogwan management, and the hogwan might not be a wonderful place to work at.
Korea is a different country with a different standard of living. If you expect to live the same lifestyle that you are living at home then you will likely end up unhappy here. That's why people say to do your research. It's all about what you can tolerate and what you can be happy with. |
