"Naturalized citizens are not required to take a Korean surname but many of them do so for convenience."
Actually, in my experience, this information isn't always given out. In fact, we were lied to. When we registered our son, we were told he needed a Korean name, so was our friend when she went to register her own daughter. |

Because, as with everything here, when a bureaucrat doesn't know the answer, he will make it up. Happened to a mate of mine down in Gwangju years ago when he was registering his daughter's name as well. |

I doubt that was the case in this instance. |
