Well, I don't actually hate him but I am a bit jealous. My brother had just moved out to Ft. McMurray, Canada to work as a Network Administrator for a large oil company there. He was offered a really good employment package and salary (he's 23). Anyway, he's been there a few months and his job has not been what they promised him he would be doing. So, he started applying for other jobs. Well, I found out today that he got this other job. His salary is 88,000 CAD a year, good vacation time, a 3000.00 signing bonus, and they also pay a large portion of his rent (forget how much). Did I mention he did a two year college program and that my mother and father paid for most of that? And up until a few months ago he had never left home.

Now let's look at me. A BA and a BEd....student loans coming out of my ass. Currently making about 50, 000 CAD a year in HK. Thinking of returning home for more 'job satisfaction' (I know, am I mental?) where my salary will drop to some figure in the 40,000 range if I can even find a teaching job. And I always thought that 'I' was the smart one. Crying or Very sad

Edit: Now you're supposed to tell me that even though he makes more money, I'm the richer one because of my vast travel experiences and cultural learnings...right?...guys?

It is kind of an indication we were suckers for getting educations. A lot of my friends back home work up in the Fort and are easily making way more than I make.

But it is Fort MacMurray, yes. There's no point in earning a ton of money if you don't have anything good to do with it.

Dude, 80,000 is what it says in his contract.

How much does he put in his pocket after:

1) paying 30% in Income and Provincial Tax, UI premium, CP, and Union dues if applicable.

2) paying GST on nearly all purchases

3) paying HUGE rent in Ft. Mac.

4) paying his $600 truck payment, and for his gas.

5) Paying for Car insurance

6) Paying for Alberta Health Care

7) Paying for his huge bar bill, since all there is to do in FT Mac is drink, smoke, and f*ck.

At the end of the day, I bet you save a hell of a lot more than your "rich" brother after one year. And you won't be a drug addict or have an STD, which is probably 50% of Ft Mac (not an official statistic, just a feeling).

People talk about their income like it's THE big picture when in reality it's not.

How much is your brother paying in expenses? How about taxes?

If you wanna get jealous, look at his cashflow (Income - expenses) and look at yours.

Lol. It's like those people who say: well, I make six figures! In reality, those "six figures" go towards their bank, credit cards, student loans, and much much more. So they dont make the six figures, their creditors do...they make what's left Crying or Very sad

Personally, I'd rather have better cashflow than higher income...especially if you have to trade even MORE time of your short life for that higher income..even though the government would prefer the former of the choices.

Also, you can tell him to enjoy it while it lasts. If it's so good, you can bet that other people are fighting for that spot as we speak...but I'm sure he's going to hold it for a while since he sounds competitive..and he's your bro

This is a case of "yes-but." Yes, he makes the big cash but he lives in Fort Mac. Obviously this is a bad, bad time.

As another example, my twin sister is working in Toronto as a chemical engineer. She makes a cool 80 000 or so. When I asked her how much money she saved each month, it's about $2000 (the same as me!). It's all a matter of perspective. Free rent and low tax here helps a lot.

wait a second... you got an education degree and you're complaining about the pay?

I'm sorry - but in my intro to ed course (that's a sophomore class) I was fully informed about what my pay/hours/stipulations/benefits were for being a teacher. There's no way I can complain. I knew it from the beginning.

Seriously if some of the posters on this board were to be believed, you'd have to be bringing in $200,000 US a year to save the same as 2.5 mil won a month in Korea!

What with taxes and all.. Confused
