I'm seeing a gap in the forums for teachers in the US. All of the major sites use crap software. phpBB is far superior to whatever they use at teachers.net

so i build a phpBB board and now I don't know how to get people to start reading and posting.

on one hand, I could try to build a huge base of info myself, but on the other hand, it would seem like some people would be willing to contribute since it's for a good cause (helping teachers communicate)

i don't even think its polite to advertise my board name here so...

well, I certainly don't mean to breach forum netiquette, but the board name is www.whatsupteach.com, and it's currently almost vacant. it is just an organization of topics and a mission statement.

but as far as i know, it is the only phpBB-powered board for US school teachers. if i could get a handful of posters, then at least we could have a conversation going.

if anyone has any advice for how to get started...

It's not very hard.

But you need to start with about 10 to 20 users.

Well, Dave's was created in the infancy of the internet.

That plus expats seeking a way to communcate fuelled this board.

However, I kind of doubt that you have the first board for teachers in the US.

For teachers of what?

Did you really check out what's available?

Well I am a little surprised but the only boards I find out there are powered by a crappy interface. Teachers.net, the math forum, craigslist educ forum - none of these really suit me despite that they have a lot of activity. Do you know of a teacher forum that uses decent software?

Another reason this place is so popular is because there is much to rant about here in Korea. Expat teaching sites about say, Prague, Budapest, Japan, are far less frequented, because generally there are far few problems for the teacher in those places.

The best way to get a forum off the ground is rumours, gossip, sex, drugs, and violence (did I forget rock 'n' roll?). The second best way to get a forum off the ground is put a few pounds of dynamite under it.

I'm with you too. My disscussion board is php. I just started it this past weekend. I have a few users already. REally though, it is all about people's preferences and how you can appeal to them. I mainly set mine up for my university and area here in Wonju. This weekend, I will set up an area for my students.

Look, I had a popular messageboards in the past.

What was the key? 10 to 20 core users and SPAM!

I still have people who post here who will never forgive me. I used to SPAM this place silly. Hell, I've been banned from this joint a million times. It works.

My advice? Sign up to the other teacher websites. Then send the users private messages. Tell them what you have to offer. Sell them on your site.

If you wait for them to come, you'll go belly up. Sell your product.

By the way, when you do get some core users, make them mods.

They eat that crap up.

Makes them feel important.

I think the OP wants a successful message board.

Look at the facts.

There are tons of messageboards on ESL.

Only one in the past competed with this joint. That was my little board.

I must have been doing something right.
