"NASA Astronaut" probably ranks among the most difficult positions on the planet to get into -- psych evals for extreme stability, etc.

Yet at the end of the day, the numbers get even them...

Genuinally shocked as well . . . especially the part where she wore a diaper on her 1000 mile drive so that she wouldn't have to waste time with bathroom stops. That is driven . . . no pun intended.

It reminds of all of the failsafes in Dr. Strangelove, which in the end failed.

I don't know if they still do it, but for a while they would chain shut the main orbiter door while the shuttle was in space. It was prompted after an experiment failed. The scientist/astronaut on board had trained for half a decade to conduct his experiment in space and nothing worked. He confessed he seriously felt like opening the hatch in space and killing himself.

I'm skeptical those psych tests are really indicative of much.

If only she'd waited till they were both on the ISS...

and deep-sixed her HAL-style.

The book rights and movie options would have been out of hand.

In space everyone can hear you scream
