Newbies always wonder what the wrapped trees in the winter is all about. So, . .
The wrapping is put on the tree to trick insects coming down for the winter, seeking shelter in the grass at the base of the tree, into thinking they have reached the ground. The insects snuggle up in the grass that is wrapped around the tree, then, in the spring, some aujulshi comes along and removes the grass, disposing of it (used to burn them on the spot, but now has to haul them away).
[/img] (Click on pic for enlarged detail.)
But why they sometimes go this far . . . I'm not sure ! Just a form of art that grew out of the initial wrapping purpose? Can be quite beautiful, though, with the right trees, right location and right light.
Can you imagine the time it takes some aujulshi to do this ?!

Can we come up with a more creative explanation for those grass skirts to tell n00bs? They keep ghosts away or they are a symbol of femininity or something like that. Come on, these things deserve a real urban myth. |

They're scratching posts for ajuma, right? Whenever I go hiking I see older people banging up against trees. I guess they don't know about these more advanced models. |

mmmmm.....do the trees really need all this tender loving care? Not only do they get wrapped but they get crutches too!!!
I reckon a lot of stuff that goes on in Korea is to get the elderly Park Chung-hee generation out of the house so they don't bother their families. |

No, I heard it keeps ghosts from possessing the tree. |

If you're familiar with the works of the post-modern clagnut, Christo...you'll see that this is more brainless, anti-art perpetrated by him or someone like him. He's some idiot Eurotrash trusfundafari who likes to wrap stuff. A$$hole. |

Winter wear
January 18, 2007
Trees don straw mats in a park in Suwon, Gyeonggi province, as they do throughout Korea during the winter. Harmful insects nestle in the mats, which are burned in the spring. [NEWSIS]
