Hi,
Tis been awhile since anyone posted here...I know how to build my computer from absolute scratch, and I would very much like to take advantage of this cheap marketplace. However, I've heard someone quote a 21" LCD noname monitor at costing 350,000 won, which is ridiculous since I can buy an LG 22" widescreen hi-res hi-contrast for a mere 275,000 won. Now, they very well could have been buying it somewhere other than yongsan.
So to sum up, if building from scratch, not requiring any software (can put that on myself) just need an english keyboard and a motherboard running BIOS in english, is it definitively worth my while to build a comp when I get to KOrea, rather than bring a laptop?
Cheers,
Jon |
Building one here is about 1/4 the cost of bringing a COMPARABLE laptop from home.
I don't know about the cost of a 21" LCD but I got a 17" for under 200l and my 19" was 220k.
You can build an entry level system for 300k, an OK system here for under 500k, a nice system for a million and a real kick ass top end mother for about 1.5mil.
Some prices are marginally higher than home but after you factor in the hassle of dragging everything with you and then getting it home again after your year....
it is much easier to spend 500k and just build a disposable one. |

| The only thing that you (well, I) really can't find for a good price here is an LCD monitor. Everything else you would definitely be better served building yourself here. I'm sure someone can offer more specifics as to why the market for monitors is so seemingly controlled. |

After reading a couple of these threads threw, I checked out the Danawa website. Since I can't read Korean, and was copy pasting all the words into a translator (which barely helped) I could be wrong. However, there were LG monitors 23", and 26" listed at 200k and 210k respectively on that site. Maybe they're used, but I could care less, I have an LG monitor now and it's of damn good quality.
I'm still not sure how the setup of that site works. Are the prices based from retailers that are located out of Yongsan or what? How do you even go about picking up items you buy from the website if you so choose do that?

| Oh, and also, are there any components I should consider buying in Canada, ie video card or RAM, that I may have trouble finding cheaper prices/comparable quality in Korea? |

Most (though not all) of the sites linked to Danawa and omi.co.kr are in Yongsan, though not all of them are actual stores. Last September I dropped in one one such place using the address in fine print at the bottom of their site, which was basically a tiny office with two guys, a desk, a laptop and a phone, procuring goods from all over the district and offering them online.
Most people buy with credit cards, but paying them a visit is usually possible, especially if they're in Sunin Plaza, and many are (see the parent post in this thread about Sunin Plaza). Also, you could get a Korean friend to call them up and order for you.
About the components: no, computer stuff, across the board, is a better deal in Korea. EXCEPT, laptops and fully assembled systems tend to be cheaper still in North America, though that gap isn't what it used to be. |

| I've been reading this thread and now the information is a couple of years old. I was wondering if the best place to get digital cameras might have shifted or if there have been any major changes in price etc. |

Where can I get burned PS2 games in Yongsan (or anywhere else for that matter)?
I know about the guy at the end of videogame alley, but his selection wasn't the greatest (a lot of games I wanted were not available in English).
So is there anywhere else? |

| I'm in the market for either a Cowon d2/a2 or an iriver clix. First, are these products in Yongsan the real deal or knock-offs? Second, assuming they are real, can anyone recommend a good store in the area? Thanks |

I would make an educated guess that 85-90% of the market will be open (and that does NOT mean just in I'Park mall above yongsan station).
Most of the places in Son-in Plaza and Nanjin arcades are open 364 days a year (all bets are off for Chuseok).

Hi,
This thread has mentioned several times in the past that laptops are the one thing that tends to be more expensive (even in Yongsan) than back in the USA or Canada. How true is that now? Are prices still discouraging?
I'm in the market for a new laptop, mostly for writing and web surfing. Nothing fancy.
Also, I know that the other main concern is the warranty. Any options there?
Thanks,
Kynan |

Laptops will run 800k+ for a new one and then you have the language issue to deal with (getting it changed or an English system in the first place).
Unless you really need the portability of a laptop it is still easier to get a new, entry level desktop for 400k (including monitor) and then sell / dispose of it when you leave.
It will do everything that a cheap laptop will do + more AND cost 1/2 as much. |
