I love my dog immensely and I want to bring him over with me in Korea. Can someone tell me about their experience when bringing over their dog? Is there a ridiculous quarantine involved? Please let me know. Thanks so much! |

| There's not really any serious quarantine. I have some friends who brought over three cats and a dog and they hardly had any problems. |

| There are several threads done on this. Do a search and you can get more detailed information. Getting dogs in is very easy, though the trip is quite traumatic for them. It is a little costly due to the airline expense, and you need to make ABSOLUTE sure that your landlord will allow you to keep them. There have been many ads on here from people trying to get rid of pets after they thought it would be okay and (they say) their school/apartment manager said no. |

HB,
Just make sure your housing situation will permit it before bringing him over. We brought our pooch with us to America and back to Korea (last week of January) and had no hitches.
Just make sure you:
1. Get the right size/construction of a carrier for the plane.
2. Get all the required shots/immunization needed (rabies). If your boy has had this shot last year, you should be kosher...if not, get the shot at least one month BEFORE your flight date. Also, for "just in case" if he got his rabies shot Feb. 23, 2006 and your flight is February 22. 2007...get it one more time.
3. You need to get a health certificate (from APHIS for Americans http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ ) that is NO MORE than 30 days before your flight date. You can get the form from your vet.
When you get off the plane and pick up your luggage, an employee will be there with your pet and will guide you to the animal area of Customs for documentation check.
The Korean Customs site state(d) that there is a mandatory 10-day quarantine period...we got waived through in a matter of seconds.
PM for more details if you need.
!shoosh,

Off-topic, but how much would it be to take a couple of cats back to the States? Anyone have experience with this?
The wife and I are thinking about going for several weeks, and I need my babies with me. Will it be pricey? |

If you're only going for a visit, you'd be better to leave them here in someone's care. Air travel is still stressful for them. |

| I was thinking the same, but it might be for 6 or 7 weeks. Still better to leave them, huh? |

We brought our dog over from vancouver in march aught 5.
It was a breeze. A three minute wait while they checked our dog's forms (she's a jindo mix so I think they were curious). Make sure the shots are all up to date (ESP. rabies!).
We got our shots two days before we left and had NO problems.
No quaruntine. At least, I've NEVER heard of a quaruntine
When I looked at the website in 2005, it was bit unclear as to whether:
1) The information was specifically for house pets (cats dogs etc...) and not farm animals or exotic pets
or
2) Whether the quaruntine WAS mandatory.
So I'd go with people's experience. |

| I brought my two dogs from Canada. All that was required was a letter from a vet and a rabis vaccine at least one month before entering the country. It goes the same way when you return! |
