Thousands of university and college students rallied across Canada on Wednesday as a national day of action to demand lower tuition fees and more education funding.
The Canadian Federation of Students, an alliance of more than 80 student unions, organized rallies on campuses and marches on provincial legislatures. Workshops, panel discussions and information pickets are also taking place.
At the University of Toronto, hundreds gathered on campus before marching to the Ontario legislature to present their demands At a rally at the Nova Scotia legislature in Halifax, about 250 students banged on drums and chanted slogans, and some carried signs reading: "Students aren't cash cows."
Student activists say they want affordable post-secondary education and relief from heavy student debt loads. They want governments to spend $4 billion more each year on college and university education.
According to the federation, student debt in Canada is estimated at $20 billion across the country and is increasing by about $1.5 million per day.
"We very often try to visualize the debt problem on our campuses with walls of debt where students come and show their debt," Jesse Greener, the federation's Ontario chair, told CBC News.
"I've seen students who have over $100,000 in debt. We're talking public debt through the loans program, we're talking credit card debt, we're talking debt from the bank of Mom and Dad," he said.
"It's really a problem that hits students and their families from all different directions. What it means is that when people graduate, when they are into their working lives, when they want to participate in society, they are just handcuffed and unable to do so." |

100,000 in ebt? HOW? When I was at uni it cost about 6,000 bucks CANADIAN for a year of study (ok I dont remember the exact number as my faher paid for my education). STILL, 6,000 per year for 4 years is 24,000. Lets say its 8,000 now, thats still only 32,000 bucks. How the hell does anyone end up owing 100,000 dollars? |

If you are a student in alberta, you can use the summer to go up to the rigs, make WAY more than enough money for your year of partyin in uni.
Actually, you could probably do that no matter where you lived in canada. Hell they'd probably pay for your flight over there...and even if they didn't, what's one more 500$ loan: Tell the bank your flying up to the rigs, they'll throw money at ya. |

That is the way I did it. Worked my butt off every summer at jobs I hated. Even in the '60's I drove a sports car to school.
I have a son that works the rigs as an EMT and he clears at least 2000 a week, working about 3 weeks with two off.
You want help with your tuition? Get a job, cut the partying, take something useful rather than some fool liberal arts course that qualifies you to teach English in Korea or go on the dole. |

I think uni in Canada is very affordable. My fees were 4 - 6k a year. Totally affordable. |

Bingo. Too many students are wasting their time in Arts. Then they wonder why they can't get a job. |

Geesh what a bunch of whiners up there...Come down south of the border and we'll show you some real tuition hikes. On top of that you'll have to pay out your a$$ for health insurance. And we Americans don't all get to live in igloos which are made from FREE ice! You've got it made. |

It's a bit of an exercise in hopelessness. People protest against high tuition every year. They'll listen this time because...? Because university students are such reliable voters?
I think the only thing they can fairly argue is tuition hikes have been much higher than what one can account for by inflation. Is the government unduly shifting a burden onto students? Instead of raising the fee on license plates, shift the burden to tuition, for example... |

Last year we took to the streets in Quebec and the provincial government backed off the lifting the freeze.
Why should excessive ameriacn prices for schools mean that Canadians shouldn't want affordable education? |

Not to pick on the Canadians but by the evidence displayed on this site, you all have been overcharged for the product. Maybe a reduction is in order. |

Because some Canadians object to subsidizing useless layabouts. |

I would hardly say it really looks better on the other side. The grass isn't greener south of the border when it comes to education unless you're talking about the Ivy League schools. I am not sure there is really a difference between the grads from both countries.
As far as what I would say regarding the issue, there should be more grants and tuition shouldn't go up so quickly considering how important it is to have a degree. |

throw in the Uni. of California, U of Michigan, U of VA, UNC, maybe a couple other public universities, Stanford, Duke, U of chicago, etc and yeah, you might be right.
BTW, ya-ta was just teasing you there. |
