Anyone willing to guess if legit Vista will install from a pirated version of XP? Or would I have to do the clean install option and lose all my programs and data?

Does the validation check from Microsoft show it as legit? If it does then I bet it will work just fine.

Just buy the upgrade version and install it WITHOUT THE KEY. This will give you a trial for 30 days. Then do a reinstall and this time use your key.. There is a bug that enables to upgrade from the upgrade... Good ole' MS.

Microsoft does require you to have Windows XP or 2000 installed on your PC in order to use the upgrade version of Vista, but you do not have to activate the previous version of Windows.

So far I have not been impressed at all with VISTA, It's just a resource hog. I have a pretty good laptop, XP runs like a dream. I installed the ultimate version (legit) and its sluggish to say the least. Just bloat-ware!!!

It's just going to be a pain in the ass to buy new software all over again.

I do not actually see any reason to upgrade to Vista for the average user. Yes you gamers with the DX10 blah blah blah, but honestly, give me a few good reasons to upgrade, and dont give me that nonsense about security, we all know how good MS is at security.

I am listening...

I hear you and too, am listening.

DX10...yeah, they have us at gunpoint on that one. When it becomes necessary, I will download Vista. Yes, download. It will be the first time in my computing history that my OS will not have been legit. By the time DX10 is a fact of life, Vista will be Swiss cheese and very workable.

I'd like to try Vista, but I'd rather not. I know I'll end up wasting a million won to upgrade my computer if I do.

To be honest with you this OS is stupid fast actually.

Faster then XP. Boots faster WAY faster. Things just seem to come a live quicker.. More responsive in many ways..

I got a x2 3800
2 gigs of ram
320 gig HD.. (I had one crash on me recently) One is at my friends in external case.

Sorry, what do you mean by 'stupid fast'?

Of course if you have a clean install, it may 'seem' faster, but wait a while.

Also, you do have a system that seems to be above average, but I dont feel like upgrading my system for a OS that does not give me any benifit.

I am suprised how well MS has packadged the OS. MS did an excelent job at scheduling maintanence on the OS. Plus the monitoring software thats included in Vista does a good job telling you and helping you optimize the OS.

I just read some reviews comparing a clean install and and upgrade install of Windows Vista. It turns out that they're pretty much dead even in performance.

There probably is really no such thing as an upgrade. They are all full install. The upgrade is just a cheaper license to entice those who already own an Windows OS.
