A friend working in HK says his students aren't imaginative enough to come up with such a thing.

Even on the asian propoganda based programmes on Discovery mentions are made of him being a player.

There was a funny report of Jackie getting sloshed,jumpin
g on stage during someone else's performance,demanding to sing,abusing the crowd and being abused in turn.i'll have to hunt that out.It was mid-2006.

As for ZZ,I've finished my month of mourning.

I hate movies with sped up action scenes and wire foo they are plain stupid. Thus most chinese MOVIES blow..

Although I like Thai movies.

That rumor has floated for years among mainland Chinese but is unsubstantiated. Both parties deny it. Ziyi was referred to as "Little Gong," a swipe at Gong Li. But the latter had a real relationship with Zhang Yimou. I kinda doubt Ziyi as she was only 17 at the time she filmed with him and her parents are quite conservative, but stranger things have happened.

You haven't got a clue if you think most Chinese films involve wushu.

Saw "In The Mood For Love" by Wong Kar Wai today.

I hesitate to say "by" as as the characters are trying to decide whether or not to just go for it-in the absence of their "absent" spouses-he replays situations where they say yes or no.They're gonna bonk,they're not.....the cast iron bars remain a motif though.

Finally he takes a voice again and the story continues.

I'd seen 2046 before so seeing this was starting to make me feel a bit groggy.

I still liked it though,but mainly I liked it in it's details.For example when he starts to try his hand at fantasy serials and he's puffing away on his fags,the smoke seems more like "steam" coming from his mental exertion,the slippers put down as she gets back home eluding the toothy interest of her housekeeper...

Also interesting were the deliberate kind of stoppages.The blank white screen before Mr.koo runs out sick(how Maggie Cheung's character got in?)and the time after Chow moves into room 2046.

I guess an argument could be made for whether Wong is more interested in using film to express time as a modernist or abnegating that essential part of film altogether.I think he plays with both but favours the former,though after a time both really seem to deal with time(re-collections,re-orderings,longings......)

When the characters left HK though,to Singapore and Cambodia??..lost me.Story just became peripatetic(sp)ie off on a tangent.

i find shu qui's acting a lot more convincing than zhang ziyi, even with her participation in all those (sometimes awful) b-flicks. and yes shu qi was initially offered the role of yu jiao-long CTHD but her manager turned it down for some strange reason. zhang ziyi stalked the director and co. until they finally agreed that she was the next best choice.

just kidding -- well i read that from a magazine a long time ago. i dunno what is it that i dont like about this girl, but i just cant seem to see past her CTHD character. like someone else who had posted earlier ... i dont know any chinese person (that has been watching chinese movies regularly since the 80s) who thinks much of her.

liked ang lee's older movies, for example, PUSHING HANDS (about an elderly chinese man who's trying to stand on his own after realizing how difficult it was to live with his son's family) and THE WEDDING BANQUET (about how a gay chinese man in the states tries to put on a make-belief wedding with a chinese girl for the sake of his parents). Those movies are, in my opinion, less fluff -- and more content.

i enjoyed INFERNAL AFFAIRS, but one of my all-time favorite cop movie is RUNNING OUT OF TIME starring sean lau and andy lau. there is also a sequel with ekin cheng but it had no point so dont bother with it.

has anyone seen wong kar wai's HAPPY TOGETHER with leslie cheung and tony leung? amazing acting with a good, solid storyline -- and more dialogues than IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.

someone was asking about 'wushu' earlier -- wushu is a more demonstrational form of kung fu, with flashy moves that are lighter and definitely less damaging than combat kung fu. i know some old-school martial arts folks that really look down on wushu, because most of the stuff that are taught these days are used primarily for competitions.
