It only takes that number to fly two jets into skyscrapers or blow up a subway. Amazing how dispassionate discussion of this methodology makes you. |
Sure. But there isn't any assimilation policy in the world that is going to stop them. Preventing terrorism should be a separate concern from Muslim "assimilation," whatever the heck that's supposed to be.
And yes, I try not to be guided by passions. I never jumped on the Bush bandwagon after 9/11, opposed the Iraq invasion before it started, and have always hated the Yankees, Cowboys, and Irish. |

So you didn't support the invasion of Afghanistan or just Bush foreign policy in general? And who is it exactly that you hate? Sports teams?

Fair enough. But my response might come nearly two weeks from now as my wife and I are off to Thailand and India on holiday. |

As if it matters to this discourse, I believe the Gulf War was well done. I supported the invasion of Afghanistan (with reservations about how quick and easy people predicted it would be). I still support NATOs presence in Afghanistan, even though the execution is showing signs of failure. Overall, Bush's foreign policy has not impressed me in the slightest.

I'll leave it to your imagination.

Bingo.
After the Oklahoma City bombing, there was no mass campaign to assimilate the whole "militia culture" into mainstream society, nor should there have been. But there might have targetted law-enforcement efforts to monitor specific militia groups that could have been planning similar attacks.
And to show you that I'm not just some self-loathing multiculturalist who condemns his own kind while defending the brown-skiined miscreants, I will say that I thought much of the post-Oklahoma media hoopla about militias was overdone. |

Don't worry, I'm not going to Indonesia, the Philippines, or Pakistan. Couldn't pay me to visit any of those places until their governments stop acquiescing to terrorist sympathizers. As for India, we won't be going to Kashmir and as for Thailand, avoiding the south.
Sad that a peaceful predominantly Buddhist country like Thailand has to put up with the shi-t from Muslim extremists in the south. The Thais can hardly be called bellicose and yet the Islamofascists want to stir up separatist sentiments for the Muslim minority there too.
ALL:
I won't be assimilating, since I'm not immigrating. But I will be highly receptive to cultural differences there.

I'm happily vegetarian, and never eat the so called 'food' at KFC. |

Steve, what is up with that slam on the Phillipines? They don't acquiesce to terrorism and 90% of the people are Catholics. I wouldn't go to Pakistan either. I would consider certain parts of Indonesia, however.
I wouldn't go to Indonesia before scoping out the area. Certain places are dangerous for Westerners. There is no doubt about that. |

Parts of Jersey, Toronto, and Dallas. Just kidding, pal. Obviously, there are parts of Indonesia such Aceh which you should avoid. I also would be careful in Pakistan, unless I was in certain parts of the capital or Karachi. I've never been to Pakistan, but I am saying if I went there. I have gone through hot areas before with another Western friend. I felt nervous, but I figured I could handle myself. |
