I had no deductions from my severance pay - it was the exact amount of my current monthly salary.

wow. Shocked So either:

A) our places of employment have it all wrong and we are getting taxed too low

B) your place wants you to cover a lot more for some other underlying reason

C) we get taxed at 3.3% but get a huge refund back (as Americans are this year).

This is bizarre. Should I be surprised? Not really this is Korea.

Could it depend on the number of employees in the company?

Did u contact the tax office?

Yes. Call Sun-a from the tax office (02-397-1448). She is nearly fluent in English and is happy to help you. She'll explain everything AND if your job is messing around with you in terms of tax, TELL her! She'll get on them like white on rice!
