Several threads have gone missing without any reasons given to the OPs as to why they were removed. Sometimes, when a thread disappears, there are obvious reasons for their removal. However, many times, threads which seem rather normal get yanked.

I'd like to think that we can open this up for debate without the mods deleting this thread. It might give the mods something to think about. Wink

I guess I should go first.

I voted 'yes'. For example, Yu_Bum_suk's "Reforms of 1894" seems like a nice enough thread, but it got yanked and Yu_Bum_suk didn't get any explanation as to why.

Another example is the one that Son Deuro! (sp) started about this wonderful young hagwon English teacher who had studied in Canada:

And then there's Mr. moffat's thread about assault. I'll admit there's the possibility for a thread like that to get out of hand, but I didn't see that happening there. Unless, of course, a flame war started that I didn't have time to see before it got sent to the dungeons of Dave's. But even then, why not just erase those posts and keep the thread alive?

Now, I know the mods aren't paid for what they do, and I appreciate their efforts in trying to keep the board clean, but there should be a protocol in place for this kind of thing.

I had a thread pulled and I was PMed an explanation.

I voted yes, as I think it's just common courtesy to tell people why you are pulling threads.

BTW... the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw this thread was that I wonder how long it would be before they pull this thread... hehe..

Well we know she's Almond Tease, and that someone I happen to be married to bears a striking resemblance to her, but fewer ribs visible.

And fewer movies on the internet, we assume.

I'd like to see a sticky topic titled "DELETED THREADS" which listed each and every thread which was removed and a brief explanation.

For example:

"K-women vs W-Women round 1065" deleted because: retarded

"Almond Tease" deleted because: too many people requested the name of her hagwan.

"New Korean History Thread" deleted because: VANK told us to.

"wet t-shirt competition" deleted because: it mentions a competing website.

And so on.. a thread which explained and announced these things would stop a whole bunch of middle-aged male Canadian geeks from getting their panties in a bunch and allow them to go out and get girlfriends instead of worrying about threads on Dave's.

So, in conclusion, explanations please (public ones, not just boring PMs.. a lot of us other folk have read deleted threads but we don't get the PM explanation because we weren't the OP.. but we're still curious!)

Speaking as an old mod, in general if we pulled a thread an effort would be made to contact the OP to explain the reasons for it.

In general the reasons why a thread is pulled:

1. Not safe for work. A lot of teachers do check the boards at work and given that this is a board about English Teaching, that takes precedence over bouncing boobies.

2. Trolling. Someone posting something offensive merely for the fun of getting a rise out of people.

3. Job advertisements. The revenue from the advertisements pays for the board. 'nuff said.

Special cases:
I was a mod during the 'spectrum gate' scandal. Dave requested that threads about the issue be deleted and that threads that were potentially seen as degrading to Korean women be nixed. While I didn't agree with certain parts of the decision, it's his board and his revenue so he calls the shots.

If you do have a problem with a decision, try contacting one of the mods or the big guy himself.

I have a question: is there any truth to the rumour that Nambucaveman was actually cubanlord?

I've had threads locked and pages deleted - and I voted "yes" on this poll - but the mods have always tried to give me reasons why (so I usually let them off with just a warning Cool ... )

Sometimes I've had explanations and sometimes I haven't. One mod once told me that some internal glitch in the site was causing threads to disappear, but I don't know if that was just an excuse of a klogical nature. Some old threads that had a lot of heated argument have also disappeared. If I post something like my friend's note to his boss referring to them as f-ing morons and the mods delete it I can see where no explanation is really necessary, but when it's something as benign as historical reforms I can't help but wonder if someone who just doesn't like discussing certain topics is pulling the strings.

I just had a thread deleted,and I did get a reason why.

It is not my board, so I have no say. I just think that we should be allowed to post some place when some one rips us off. Kinda a "black list"
