There was a big fire in Yeosu this morning at the immigration office. Nine people were killed - Chinese and Uzbekistan nationals among them. The last paragraph says something about the closed-circuit camera being covered with toilet paper...

Does anybody have any further information?

I wonder if those who died were in the lockup at the time.

It happened at four o'clock this morning, so they may indeed have been in the lockup - terrible way to go if that was the case.

I can't understand the article exactly but IF a camera on the scene was deliberately covered before the fire broke out, this could be a huge story.

Can anyone help with the translation? I'm only getting the jist.

Will be interesting to see what happened and why there is indeed a cover-up.

Why isn't this story on the Korean Herald or Korea Times?

Well, it is on KBS1's 9 pm news. A good 10 minute segment...

Some heads will roll for sure. All the detainees did NOT have materials (so far as it is known) that could cause the fire, so who did and how did they gain access? This will be interesting.

Another problem, why weren't the gates/doors opened faster to get them out? The officials first tried to put the fire out with extinguisers (whilst the detainees were STILL LOCKED UP). Shocked Shocked Shocked

I hope I misunderstood the news...

!shoosh,

Ryst

Sounds like another victory for the sheer incompetence of Korean law-enforcement!

According to the Korea Herald, it was one the inmates who did that before he started the blaze.

But what's so sickening about these deaths is that the sprinklers didn't operate and neither did the fire alarms.

Just watched it on MBC news. It was the number one story for tonight.

Supposedly a Chinese guy covered the CCTV camera and started the fire but all they showed on the news (CCTV footage) was the guy getting a drink of water and not him actually covering the camera as the immigration officials have said which seems a bit strange to me. They said 7 Chinese, 1 Uzbecistanian, and 1 Sri Lankan died in the fire in 3 different cells in the lock up of Yeosu immigration.

They showed footage of the burnt out lock ups and said that there were no fire sprinklers systems in the lock ups and that the CCTV cameras weren't always being monitored.

They also showed a press conference with government and immigration officials who all looked pretty unhappy as they had just been caught with their pants down (again), having absolutely no safety measeures in place for anyone in the lock ups of Yeosu immigration.

Nothing ever seems to change in this country until someone actually dies from the incompentance of some bureacratic fools.

I think some heads will have to roll for this as it has happened so publicly.
