Given the choice, I'd rather hear Bruce doing "Born In the USA" backed by the E-Street Band (in its prime...) than the dreary solo version that I've heard him do... I haven't heard the new album yet, though - hopefully he has good back-up musicians and vocalists to carry what he lacks in those areas ...
Although I like the energy of "Born to Run", "Glory Days", etc., I find his songs lamenting the plight of the poor and homeless at least somewhat hypocritical in light of the fact that he tries to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone trying to make ends meet by scalping tickets or selling T-Shirts at his concerts ... |

Bruce supports honest poor people mate, it's that simple. Why would he want to turn a blind eye to disshonest poor people who are ripping off other ( honest ) poor people? |

I think that a lot of poor people can't afford to be honest (and would prefer to make money by scalping tickets and hawking made-in-China T-shirts rather than dealing drugs...) Of course, some scalpers - the ones who print fake tickets or organize to buy up large amounts of tickets in advance at regular prices - should be stopped, but I think the majority of them just work hard finding people who have extra tickets, buying them for as little as they can, and re-selling them at whatever price the market will support...
The big ticket agencies like Ticketmaster who have lobbied for monopolies also more-or-less rip off the public, and some performers have tried to avoid dealing with them (possibly even Bruce...)
As far as T-shirts and other copyrighted merchandise, I doubt that any person who gives some hustler ten bucks in a concert parking lot for a shirt that resembles the "official" ones selling for three times as much inside feels like he's been ripped off - they know they're getting bootleg stuff - just like respectable teachers in Korea (like me?) who buy DVD copies openly sold in public...
I can see cracking down some when it gets way out of hand, but zero-tolerance policies endorsed by big multi-millionaire performers claiming to empathize with folks struggling to avoid poverty don't seem quite right... |
