Last night I took subway Way Up North and 2 GIs heading home to Camp Casey were on it. I asked about the rape of the 67 year old woman by the GI named Geronimo something (Hispanic last name).

They said this dude was in their battalion (or whatever it's called) at Camp Casey. (They are the Bad Luck Battalion - also the source of the infamous Tank Murder of 2 Schoolgirls a few years back - and they also said the K reaction to this story was ridiculous - the girls were hit only because they stood in the blind spot for the tank - so tank's scout never saw them)

Well, back to current events:

They said the woman is a prostitute, and he didn't rape her 4 times. He'd paid for sex 3 times and on the 4th time, she called it rape.

I have no idea why the dude would go to a 67 year old pro (maybe discounted rates?) but thought this was interesting.

They have no idea if she might have been beaten on the 4th time, but they kinda doubt that the Korean papers are too careful with checking facts.

Maybe this stuff has been posted elsewhere, but if not, interesting...

Very interesting indeed. Anyone know what going on with this case?

The GI guy is a loser for sure even if he'd paid for it, but raping 67 year old K-woman is very hard to believe.

Who has sex 3 times in a row, and then forces someone for a 4th time?? Was this guy on meth or something?

I just wondered if she tried to charge more, and he hit her

Or if he tried not to pay, or paid less than she wanted, and she hit him, and got hit back

The only ones who know are those 2, eh?

But as the GIs said, we sure don't know much (that's accurate, anyway) from what the K papers write up

dumb as sh%t is how I would describe anybody who is quick to believe these soldiers or what Canuckophile said that they said. Your bias to the truth would be similar with the locals who are eager to make it an Us vs Them problem.

this is what i read from papers
the woman was on her way to work(cleaning building) around 5 or 6 in the morning and the army guy who'd been drinking till late that night found her and started raping her
fortunately that area was close to where former president Kim dae jung lives, there were cops around.
the policeman heard her screaming, he called for help and they caught the raper!

if she was a prostitute and was paid for having sex, why would they've been doing it outside in this cold winter at residence area????

maybe korean papers are making up story but what the guy you met in the subway said doesn't make sense to me

Yucky story.

i don't even want to think about how desperate I'd have to be to have sex with a 67 year old prostitute.

Yes they definitely were GI's - and perfectly nice guys - it was a long subway ride and we talked maybe 40 minutes.

What I posted was what they told me they had heard - the guy Geronimo was in their unit.

Maybe what they said is true and maybe it isn't. I'm sure they don't know the truth any more than any of us do - the only ones who know are the woman and the GI involved. (I think I said EXACTLY this on a previous post.)

I've seen enough of Korean newspapers to be quite skeptical of what they print, including information about the victim or the nature of the crime. (I recently spent quite a bit of time trying to help a Korean working at a hogwon who was, I think, unfairly charged with a crime - the web of lies in that entire situation was mind-boggling. And I couldn't help him - he was in fact convicted for something that likely was a set-up just to extort money from the hogwon.)

HOW MUCH REPORTING DO YOU HEAR IN THE KOREAN PAPERS ABOUT CRIMES AGAINST FOREIGNERS? Is your answer: uh, none? Yes, you would be right. (And no, Korea ain't crime-free. In North America, 0 break-ins to my home. In Korea, 1. Just an example... Second-hand, I've even heard of at least one suspicious DEATH that the police immediately wrote off as an accident, and was never covered in the press.)

In fact, there are more crimes committed AGAINST GIs than those committed BY GIs. Their crime rate is about HALF that of the general Korean population - this despite the fact that they are mostly young men, which makes them the population most likely to commit certain kinds of crimes, especially violent ones. (Things will probably get somewhat worse though in this respect, since army standards are dropping now cuz of the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan/and wherever else Bush has invaded. Now if you can breathe, you're in the army.)

To any Koreans out there reading, what I've found after 4 years in Korea is that I now think in terms of "US VERSUS THEM" (meaning waegooks versus Koreans) because after 4 years in Korea, that's how I think most Koreans think, based on sad experience.

Yes, we foreigners can be defensive and "circle our wagons" to protect each other- because that's the cultural situation we're in.

In North America I never had these racist tendencies. Racism rubs off, eh? When you "do unto others," you can damn well be sure it will be done unto you.

I'm going home soon and hopefully will become my non-racist self again. I'll miss the teaching (love my students - best in the world) and my true Korean friends, but not all the anti-foreigner sentiment here. In the town I live in, They Hate Us All - migrant workers, English teachers, Russians, etc. - and we actually get refused service in some places, including swimming pools/saunas, PC Bangs (and of course, overcharged by some merchants.)

What a rude person you are. Why don't you just go cross the DMZ to the North? Save us the trouble.
