I will be teachings adults at beginner's level soon - it will be my first teaching job too.
Any tips regarding how to do role play, interesting and productive games, pattern practices? |

Most will want a book. My low level adults always want a book. My intermediate are happy just to gasbag. |

They will also want to show up late, chat with each other in Korean most of the time, drink Maxim and eat those disgusting rice dak things, and then feel like they are wasting their time when they can't magically speak English.
I also get this a lot..."They don't want to learn grammar or writing or anything, just teach them to speak English" Yeah, I'm on it. No problem.

I've been teaching low-level Adults for some time now, and haven't had any problems. I recommend Top Notch Fundamentals or even Level 1. Like all beginners, take'em back to basics such as phonics and practice that for the first week. I teach the first half and then have'em act out and add to the target language. It can be pretty funny and I don't correct'em unless it's the target language.
They're adults just like you so relax, don't take it too serious as they're probably tired like you after working all day. Don't be condescending and keep it real.
Only thing to watch out for are the times when they want to go out for a drink. They get too much in'em and problems happen, so I don't do that anymore, instead I try to plan a "class trip" once a month and even have a class president. Next trip is to a local temple!
Also avoid any politically charged or religious topics....
'Bout the best I can tell ya for now. G'luck! |
