Apocalypto.

The movie has to me, all the makings of a cult classic. I can't believe I said that about a Mel Movie, but hey it does...

.... right up until the end where he tries to give it 'bigger picture' meaning by having the shot of the European vessels. Until then it was great, gruesome, grizzly and involving (my Jonathan Ross impression)

And that shot where he has the close up of our main character's eyes and does that swivel shot to show his pov, you lose points there for trying way to hard Mel... that's Sergio's shot, leave it alone...

Cool

Unbreakable.

The ending of this film was so rushed, it turned a decent film into an Unwatchable one.

Never-ending Story
The title suggested it wasn't supposed to have one! I felt lied to. Sad

Yeah the cheesiness of the ending just didn't gel with what was otherwise a fine, dark, cynical, funny movie...

Thirded.

The examples in the poll aren't as appropriate because the endings actually fit with the movies.

Don't forget the studio ending of Brazil. The main character doesn't wake up in a torture chamber. The studio cut simply ends with them escaping to the country side. I think it's known as the Sheinman edit or something. Terry Gilliam's contract gave him the director's cut. The movie in theaters was the movie he wanted. The studio head Sheinman or something didn't like the non-happy ending. He ordered Gilliam to make the cut. Gilliam pulled out his contract. The studio head was 100% furious. But when the movie came out on VHS and TV, the studio cut was shown. The studio head noted the contract only gave him director's cut for the theatrical release and said nothing about VHS/TV. VHS was still a very new market.

Directors never made that mistake again.

Jacob's Ladder with Tim Robbins was a lame ending.

I really wanted to De Niro`s character to get away at the end of "Heat", would have been a less traditional/morality-tale kind of thing...

I thought it was a fine ending. Remember, De Niro's character messed up his own getaway because he just had to get revenge.

You can surely see the irony in that. De Niro spouting off "Don't get involved in anything you can't drop in 30 seconds." And here he is; can't pass up a chance to get back at someone. Can't drop that one.

Anyway, it's hard to find any film, novel, play, etc that isn't at least a tiny bit moralizing.
