Hi all, I am about to graduate from a New Zealand University (Bachelor of Teaching) in June and I am seriously thinking of teaching in S. Korea.
I realise that their is lots of info on this site that is good but it is a little bit dated. I don't really know anything about were to start looking for reliable work and I am also interested in life for an ex-pat in Korea, are their many other ex-pats?, are Korean people into socialising with foriegners?, what is the curriculum like?
If you have any current information it would be greatly appreciated!!

It's all in the stickys and they are still current even if they are 3 years old. Nothing much has changed.
so to answer your questions...
yes, some, depends on the individual hakwon or public school. |

| If you want some degree of professionalism and want more travelling time. Apply to public schools in early April. EPIK, GEPIK SMOE to name a few. |

Why is it that those with degrees in education seem to have, on average, the worst writing one comes across on teaching websites?
At any rate, the question is whether you want to travel or save up money for travelling. If you wish to save up money just about any job will do. If you wish to have lots of time off to travel you are unlikely to be in luck with your first job in Korea. If you wish to travel around Korea you can probably see enough to have your fill after your first three or four weekends.
As for ex-pat life here, just pick some random threads on this site that look interesting and start reading away. There are lots of ex-pats here but some jobs are in remote areas where one doesn't come across many. Some Koreans are into socialising and some aren't. Younger Koreans often lead constricted lives governed by more parental control than many teenagers have in NZ. Whether at public schools or private academies, EFL curricula are generally terrible. |
