just found out today that the director cancelled all the teachers' (less the two Korean secretaries/teachers) health insurance and pension back on Dec 1st. I found out today today as I went to get a checkup that my insurance was cancalled as of Dec 1st. I spoke to my director and he explained that he could not afford to pay into the insurance or pension. He then explained that what he is doing is legal as long as the teachers are paying 3.3% for tax. I have no idea what he is talking about, but my contract specifically states that i get insurance and pension. where can i find out if what he is doing is not legal?

The only reason so far I am sticking to this place is because my contract ends at the end of July and I plan to get a public school job in august/sept.

Of course it's illegal! It's breaking your contract and is against the law. May I suggest that you show up at work with a book and refuse to work unless you get your fricking health insurance back? The last thing you want is to have a serious problem without insurance.

Why bother waiting until August to find a good public school job? There are lots of great public school jobs looking for teachers NOW!

Just explain to your director that you "cannot afford" to bother working for someone who a) doesn't abide by the contract HE came up with and submitted to you b) doesn't seem to think there's any real reason to abide by Korean labor law and c) doesn't bother to tell you that he's "canceling" your health insurance, thus leaving YOU at risk, unknowingly.

Um, yeah. What he's doing is illegal. You can light a fire under his butt by giving him 10 minutes' warning before you call the labor board, and/or use the threat of calling the labor board AND the tax office to extort a letter of release out of this guy.

Chances are, you're overpaying if you're paying 3.3% tax, and who knows if he's "canceled" the tax payments too, and just padding his own pocket.

Don't stay somewhere where they don't hesitate to rip you off and then lie to you that it is somehow legal. This guy is pathetic. Find another job.

And perhaps you should make an exit strategy that is equally informative.
Hmm, he can't afford your pension and health insurance ? Please inform us of the school, so that others can be forewarned.
