Hi Guys
For the past 4 days a cat has been tethered up at the restaurant next to my house.
It has a litter tray, and a food bowl of some sort.
The thing is it is a CAT, not a DOG and cats are such independant creatures which love to roam so this cat must be in a living nightmare.
In fact I know it is. It meows practically non stop night and day and it is not a nice melodical meow it is a tortured sounding squawk
Apart from cutting the lease, does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I can do?

I don't know if there's a lease that can be cut but if you sneak by at night and untie the leash it couldn't hurt. The cat will probably return anyways if there's a source of food (perhaps only to be re-leashed). |

Hi YBS
The cat is tethered right under my balcony in the alley between my building and the restaurant.
The leash it has must be at least half a metre long, so in theory it can roam, but not where it wants too.
My worry would be if I DID cut it it might get the leash tangled somewhere and end up strangling itself.
I will investigate tonight.

I still think the best thing to do would be contact an RSPCA-style agency as, like Yu_Bum_Suk said, it may just return and get leashed again. The best thing is for the owners to find out that what they are doing is wrong. That way it should hopefully not happen again, and the cat will be free. |

The leash is only 50cm? Couldn't you try to slip off its collar?

Yes, but the only animal organisations that I know of in Korea are the ones which rescues dogs, cats etc. They don't have any legal power to prosecute those who treat animals badly.

Maybe, but I am not sure of it's psychological condition, so I might not be able to get near it. It's a thought though.

Maybe it's in heat and tied up so it won't get knocked up. You said it's only four days, so maybe it will be freed soon.
If you've seen the ways dogs are treated all over the country, I can't imagine anyone will do anything for a cat that is leashed. |

Why don't you just politely tell the owners they don't need to put the cat on a leash, and that it's dangerous for the cat? Outdoor cats don't get lost. |

If it's squaking all night, you could shoot the cat. Everyone would understand. They would probably make soju or jigggae out of it or something. |

That thought did cross my mind too. But if it is in heat and is tied then it is definately going to get knocked up because it won't be able to run away of fight back very well.

the only organisation I know of is the one that collects strays before selling them to restaurants.
Maybe you should rescue it yourself. |

you don't understand cats. They don't return to a place where they are tied up. i know because I made the mistake of putting mine in a kennels while I went on holiday. It actually tore a hole through the wire of its cage to escape and was never seen again.
If you look after them well though, they will travel miles to find you again. |

Hmm, aside from freeing it yourself (which I would probably do, although as you said it's hard w/o knowing it's psychological condition) I'd visit a local vet. Maybe you could find one who speaks English, or maybe you can manage in Korean. They might be able to point you in the right direction. I know of a vet in a town nearby that sheltered rescued cats; and even if the vet didn't do that, maybe s/he could recommend an organization that could help. |

Maybe you can just visit this cat everyday, and give it some attention and snacks. I know its not ideal, but you cant rescue every animal here. its taken me a while to accept this myself. The attitute of the general public is so apathetic .
hmm, dunno about vets. when we found two abandoned puppies, the vet was the first to suggest that we get them put down. although I guess a vet could speak to the owners of the cat about treatment.
I've seen the same thing around my area of Daegu, cats tied up on a leash. One is just a kitten. Thankfully, that was in summer, and I'm hoping that the reason its not outside in winter is that it is inside someone comfortable, and not in someones food dish. |
