One big change I noticed was the OT that you could bank towards paid leave. The first contract stated that 1 hour of OT could be saved as 2 hours of paid leave:

"Contribution leave may be requested in place of overtime pay. Contribution leave will be calculated as two hours of paid leave for each hour of extra class taught. "

The new contract states: "For the extra class teaching hours aside from the normal 22 hours per week, Employee shall be offered with supplementary class instruction pay at the rate of 20,000won per hour or use it as contribution holiday in which 8 hours’ teaching will be considered as one(1) day of which an hour’s teaching equals an hour’s holiday contribution. "


This sucks.....So we have to teach for 8 hours, in order to get 1 day off? That doesn't make much sense since nobody teaches 8 hours during a normal work day. Shouldn't it go back to 1 hour teaching = 2 hours paid leave?

If that is what is in the contract you got offered, it is an old or modified contract. REFUSE to sign it.

Download the newest 2007 one from the GEPIK website:
http://gepik.ken.go.kr/foreign/application.php

click the download tab and scroll past the application stuff to the 2007 contract. Pay attention to Article 7 subsection 4.

Article 7(Work Hours)
1.Employee shall work eight (Cool hours per day (excluding lunch hour) for five (5) calendar days per week from Monday to Friday and shall not work on Saturdays, Sundays and Korean national holidays.
2.The Work Hours of Employee may follow the normal work schedule of civil servants of the Korean Government; however, such Work Hours may be adjusted by Director as he/she deems appropriate.
3. Employee�s regular teaching hours shall not exceed twenty-two (22) hours per week. Employee may be asked to teach some extra classes. Extra teaching should not exceed 6 hours a week without Employee�s consent.
4.Employee shall be paid for the extra working hours (or days). If Employee�s actual weekly class instruction hours exceed twenty two(22)hours, Employee shall be entitled to a supplementary class instruction pay at the rate applicable to Korean teachers for the supplementary class instruction hours.
Contribution leave may be requested in place of overtime pay. Contribution leave will be calculated as two hours of paid leave for each hour of extra class taught.

Actaully I have the one from the website, but then the recruiter I've been working with emailed me the "new" one which was supposedly finalized yesterday.

Ttompatz - The only thing I like about in the "new" one I was emailed this morning is regarding the increase in level of pay if you complete a TESOL during your contracat.
Article 8, #9 mentioned that if you're at level 3 you can move up to level 2, but there was not any mention of going from 2 to 1.
The one I received this morning says that if your qualifications change anytime during your contract you can move up to the next level.


Which one is the official contract?

I will be finishing an online 100 hour TESOL next month. You can get to level 1 by having the TESOL and 2 years of teaching experience.

However, there is no mention in the contract from the website about moving from level 2 to 1

My school mentioned it was, but only if the course was at least 120 hours...

The contract states 100 hours, and when I asked them at the time of the interview if an online TESOL was sufficient, they said it was no problem as long as it met the 100 hour requirement

Now the recruiter is telling me that the contracts can't be changed....I need to contact someone diretly with GEPIK or GMOE and find out about the OT being counted as 2 hours of paid leave, unless someone else can clarify this

The recruiter is blowing smoke out your axx. Tell THEM to download the one from the GEPIK website. That is the one you are willing to sign.

Yeah, having a rapport with Wenise is definitely a good thing. If there's a question about anything at school I get on the horn to her and get an answer from the horse's mouth, usually right away and always in less than an hour.

ttompatz, kimchi story, thanks a lot for the information about Wenise.

My principal is quite stubborn and doesn't really seem to care whatever the contract from the GPOE says. She wants to change a lot of stuff from the original contract and not much is to my advantage.

I emailed Wenise and hopefully she's as good and as quick as you say.

Tell her no. It is easier for you to change schools than it is for her to replace you. Our school district is looking for a few good teachers.

Actually, that's how I feel, but I really enjoy teaching the students I have at that school. Also, the location isn't bad. I have my own apartment, so I don't really want to have to commute for ever to go to work.

Anyway, I'll wait and see what Wenise has to say.

Out of curiosity, which school district is yours?

I just spoke with Wenise Kim and she verified that there was a new contract put out yesterday.

The new contract goes back to the old 1:1 ratio of OT worked to 1 hour of paid leave.

They also made it clear that you can move up in pay level mid contract, but only from 3 to 2, or 2 to 1, but not 3 to 1.

The housing allowance will now be given within 2 weeks of arrival in Korea since some schools were delaying the payment and teachers who did not have housing were struggling to get enough money together for rent.

Finally, she said it's up to each individual school as to whether or not they want to modify the contract. So, if you can negotiate with the school then maybe they will agree to the 1:2 ratio for holiday leave.
GMOE wants a standard contract for everyone to follow, but they really leave it up to the discretion of each school.

If you guys have any questions you should contact Wenise, as she was very helpful.

I guess I'm unlucky... I sent her email last night and haven't received any news and it's now 1 p.m.
Perhaps phone calls are the only way. I wanted to avoid that and get everything answered though email since I would have had written proof when I meet my principal. I think it would be better than to tell my principal that this person told me that.
